Current hardware:

Asus P6TD mobo (PCIe 2.0) (does support SLI)
XFX Radeon HD 5860
24gb corsair ram
i7 960 3.2Ghz

Looking to upgrade my graphics card to play some of the newer games a little better. (See star citizen) and my budget is $200-$300

Advice would be great. Thanks!

Would prefer it to be a ATI card, and it HAS to have duel monitor out. (DVI is fine)

Solution

No issues with switching to nvidia and no noticeable difference in performance with PCI-E.

A 3.0 card will work fine in a 2.0 socket. A 2.0 card will work in a 3.0 socket. It just defaults to the lower speed. As for a card, either a gtx 760, or see if you could find a gtx770 on sale.
I prefer nvidia to AMD as they update thier drivers all the time and they generally run cooler

I think a GTX 770 would be your best choice. The AMD cards are horrible value right now because of the bitcoin inflation. You should double check about the duel monitor, but I'm pretty sure the GTX 770 will support it.

Would I run into any issues with having used a AMD card for so long, and then switching to Nvidia?

(obviously I would uninstall drivers and install the correct ones, but I know some games configure for what card your running)
