hi all
if you have two branches connected over the Internet via DMVPN (for example) !
and you want to have voice call service between these branches ?
means the call will be local, like you press only the extension number and you get whom you want to speak with ?
is that possible ?

thanks,

It is a private phone system so if can work anyway you like. You can setup any type of dial pattern you like many time people will put in a office code and then a extension number for large companies. It gets very tricky to not make it confusing to the users. You do not want totaly different dialing numbers to reach someone internally as externally and you do not have a lot of control as to what numbers you get assigned on external phone exchanges.

bill001g, thank you for your reply

I am also have one more question please, (I am new to VoIP)
what are the things required to run new VoIP over the existing IP network in an enterprise,
so to both local and outside calls can work ?

It depends on what type of phone system you currently have. Many have the ability to interface with VoIP clients directly or it is a simple matter of adding a gateway device. If all you have is the old analog type of phone systems then it will require a complete replacement which tends to be expensive.

In any case to make VoIP work in all but the very simple cases you need a controller server. Cisco calls this their call manager. The main function of this is to be a central repository that keeps track of all the users who are using VoIP devices. It keeps track of what IP a user is currently using so everyone can just keep using the phone number to call. It also does all the signalling between the end VoIP phones this is how you know if it is busy etc. None of the actual voice call itself passes though this device it is only a controller. There are free versions of these available but you need to be pretty good at VoIP concepts to set it up. Again you current PBX system may have this feature.

The other box you need is generically called a gateway. There are 2 basic types. The first is designed to attach to telco system or pbx system. These emulate the older call signalling used by central office PBX systems. This is how you would get to the outside world using the more standard methods of telephone lines. The second is used to connect between VoIP systems. This is mostly used to get access to telco lines using the newer technology called sip trunking. Both these are hardware devices because they use special chips to quickly convert the call traffic from one encoding to another.

VoIP is a simple project when you just want to do some basic PC to PC phone calls but when you want to integrate it with current phone systems you are going to have to quite a bit of knowledge in many areas of voice communication.

very nice explanation, thank you.

with the improvement of the technology, and now as you know there are many VoIP free applications like skype, viber ,,,etc
then if the service is good and free, do you think companies are still want to setup WAN VoIP communication.
like for example: cisco telepresence ?

skype is only free client to client. Until they allow VoIP over cell phones data plans you will always need a interface into the phone companies and they want to charge for that. It isn't that you can't run VoIP over a LTE broadband connection the telcos won't allow the apps to be made available.
Cisco telepresence is used mostly in corporate networks not over the internet. You can make video conference work over the internet but like any video streaming over the internet it works "most" the time. "most" the time is not generally acceptable to the manager types who like to use video conferences the more than other people.
