Bad RAID0 SSD Performance

I have just recently purchased a Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB. I have had an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB. I now have them both in RAID0. The rest of my system is as follows:

ASRock Extreme 4
i5-3570k
EVGA SC GTX660
Kingston HyperX 1600MHz 2x4GB (in dual channel)


My SSD speeds are not what I expected. I get 300-320ish write/read.

I use the Intel controller and I am setup with a RAID0 128k stripe. Both SSD's are set to SSD Mode. Superfetch, Prefetch, and Indexing are off.

I am not sure where I have gone wrong.

The Kingston V300 is a slow drive. Your performance of the array will be limited to the speed of the slowest drive.

Is it too late to exchange it for another SSD?

Your motherboard has 4 SATA 3 (6Gb/s) ports.
Double-check that your SSDs are connected to the Intel 6Gb/s ports (SATA3_0 & SATA3_1), not to the ASMedia 6Gb/s ports.
See page 13 of your motherboard manual for the location of the ports.

Yep, I am aware of the ports and their position on the motherboard. The SSD's are connected to SATA3 0 and SATA3 1.

Yeah, it isn't a top of the line drive but either of the two drives should be moving faster than what I am seeing with them as RAID0.

True, your results still should be faster. Test the drives on the ASMedia 6Gb/s ports and compare the results.

Im getting roughly the same on the ASMedia controller. Even a couple meg less.

Here is my most recent ATTO numbers. Still looks very very low for 2 SSD's in RAID 0.

Advertised Read/Write speeds for the Kingston SSDNow v300 are up to 450MB/s Read and 450MB/s Write using ATTO.
Advertised Read/Write speeds for the OCZ Vertex 4 are up to 560MB/s Read and 510MB/s Write using ATTO.

As Yogi stated in his post the Kingston is the slower drive so with the v300 & the Vertex 4 in RAID-0, the maximum Read/Write speeds of the array would be 900MB/s.
900MB/s is "best case scenario"; in real-world I would expect that you would get at least 700-800MB/s with ATTO.

If you have a spare drive available then install your O/S to it, break your RAID array and benchmark each drive separately with ATTO. See if you can determine which drive (if any) is not performing at advertised speeds.

If your O/S is Windows then you don't have to activate your license key after you install it on the spare drive. You can use it for 30 days (which you won't need) without activating.

To break your RAID array just change SATA mode from RAID to AHCI.
You won't lose any data doing this as long as the only thing you're doing to the drives is benchmarking them. When you're done testing then just change SATA mode back to RAID.

If both drives benchmark at advertised speeds then the issue might be with your motherboard.
