So i purchased a server off an auction site online, got a pretty good deal, i was going to set it up for a home based Media server, however i've taken a different route with that. What i'm wondering is what is the best way to utilize these 2 xeon L5410 processors? I am thinking about using them in a gaming rig, however i'm not sure what direction to go in terms of a motherboard. I've read about the socket 775 conversion that you can do with these chips, however i can only use 1 processor for that project and i would rather use both chips to build a super computer :)

I would like some direction, not opinions on the matter please, from every benchmark i've seen these xeon's should run about the same as a i7 and do a much better job at calculation processing.

So in conclusion what i need is to know what the best motherboard is for these chips together in a pair obviously with a pci-xpress slot for a video card. BTW i already have some ram that came with the system, although i wouldn't be opposed to switching over to ddr2 or 3

Thanks in advance for the advice

Games are NOT and will NEVER be optimized for two cpus, they are hardly optimized for quad cores at the moment.

I understand that they are not optimized for it, but it will still run them just as good as an i7, again, the difference is for me to build an i7 system, i will be spending around $1000, Going this route i already have the hard drive, CPU & memory so it's saving me a ton of money.

Also i already have a gaming rig, i'm doing this as sort of an experiment to see how well it will perform and if it performs well i'll be selling one of the systems.

Again i appreciate your response but i'm not looking to have a discussion about performance etc etc... i just need some advice on a good motherboard to go with that will utilize both processors

It will not run them just as good as an i7. Those are old core 2 based chips.

I don't understand what people don't grasp about not having a debate....
Here is a article from this site and to me the scores are pretty comparable even on games, the difference appears to be a few fps, which i can live with. Also like i said i already have a gaming rig, i just want a motherboard to utilize both processors. Also these are L5410's which are quad core cpu's not dual core.

What part of old architecture that isn't the same are you not grasping? Just because it is a Xeon doesn't make it better or same. There are different architecture generations of Xeon. Yours is an old core 2 based one that is far inferior to a sandy bridge, ivy bridge or haswell Xeon or i7.

Maybe not to the standards of a high end i7 but definitely comparable to an i5. Either way forget the gaming portion of it, i just would like to build a desktop system with these processors for testing, and get a good motherboard with a pci-xpress slot that will utilize both cpu's

I understand instruction sets and architecture, i get that they are not the same, however they are a decent processor and i just want to make use of them, they will make a decent desktop system, that will run applications and most games no problem... so again can you answer the question please instead of trying to get into a "king of the hill" match with me?

I don't want to get rude or fight on a forum, i hope we are both above acting like children. I understand they may not perform as good as an i7 with games, however they will perform pretty well enough for what i want. If not a gaming machine than a media server could work well.

If you have some good advice i'm all ears

Thanks

Core 2 can't touch i5 either. They cannot even beat an i3 3225.  A Q9550 is faster than your chips and it even doesn't beat an i3, except for like one area. Only way your chips are going to match or beat anything current, is in very specialized software that can make use of all 8 cores.

What are you wanting to test with this system?

I can admit when i'm wrong, taking a second look at some benchmarks, it looks like they only perform about as well as a quad core opteron or Intel Core i5-3437U....http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Xe...

That being said what can i use these for? A plex server possibly? would something such as video encoding make use of 2 quad core processors?

Video encoding would probably make use of all the cores. I believe much of the newer software out there can take advantage of many threads. Your server idea would be ok too.
