Hello,

I had just installed Avast free internet security and completed an initial scan on my PC. Avast found 1 threat and removed this threat. It then suggested I restart my computer to allow Avast to do a thorough scan before my PC booted up.

I went ahead and let Avast do this, the scan was taking forever so I decided to cancel it and do it again later as I had some stuff to do.

However since I cancelled this scan Windows 8 fails to function properly.

The computer starts up no problem and I can make my way to the desktop. Avast will no longer load and no pages will load up on google chrome.

I tried to uninstall Avast but the computer will not load up control panel.
I then tried to system restore but when I try to open system restore the system just sits there as if it is loading and takes no action.

I have tried to access system restore many different ways including using cmd prompt but none of this works.

I can't even use the search function of Windows 8 as it just freezes when I try.

I am really confused on what has happened and need some help as I can't use my computer for anything now?

Thanks.

Hello... a fast fix would be to Load a RESTORE POINT... very fast/easy Windows system fix.
Can you unistall the Avast software? What do you expect for free?
Did you make a Windows recovery Disk? when Windows was working properly? and as they suggested?
You could use the Windows install DVD to access other File restore/fix options.
Can you run MSCONFIG and shut off Avast in the "Boot" section?
Is Avast in your "Startup" folder?
Is Avast in your Task scheduler?

Herein lies many of my issues :(

I cannot uninstall Avast - When I attempt to uninstall it the computer does not respond at all.
Unfortunately I do not have a Windows recovery disk.
I cannot run MSCONFIG. When I attempt to there is no response/PC freezes.
Again, there is no response when I attempt to view my startup items.
Similarly, all attempts to access the Task Scheduler results in no response or freezing.

Hello... if you were to BOOT use a Install disk/USB? it will re-write newer OS files with the Original, using the FIX OS, but you will still have your data files/Directories... Otherwize a fresh/Clean install will get ya to Step1... and this time, please make a Recovery Disk when the OS is the way you like it.

Thanks for the suggestions, however I think I'll just take this one to the local computer shop as I've no idea what you really just said :p I'll end up making it worse.
