High CPU only when system is idle

Whenever I lock my computer and come back after a few minutes, all my my fans are running full throttle. Once I unlock my system though, the CPU drops and fans go back to normal.

This is difficult to diagnose because whatever process is eating CPU disappears instantly once I've logged back in. Are there any good tools that can indicate how much each system process was consuming at a historical point in time?

Run a full scan on your computer to be safe, malwarebytes is a good program to use if...
I don't think something is using your CPU I think the software which controls the fans is no longer running and your fans are defaulting to max power. Once you log back in the program takes control once more and turns the fan speed down.

Might want to check your bios settings to see if fan speed is controlled by CPU temp etc...

Thanks for the response! That's actually what I thought it might have been. However, I can see from my process monitor that something really is eating CPU when my system is locked. When I unlock my system, it does take a minute or so before the fans die down. I also witness a drop in my CPU usage immediately.

Run a full scan on your computer to be safe, malwarebytes is a good program to use if you think you are already infected. There is bound to be some software out there that can log what is running and all of the details but I am unsure of one. When you unlock your computer I wouldn't be surprised if the CPU monitor shows it being used but that could be from programs waking up.

Full Kaspersky and Malwarebytes scan found nothing. By the time I unlock my computer, the process eating CPU is already non-existent. Like you said, there must be a tool out there that can log which applications are eating CPU.

Thanks for the help.

So I was killing services running in my task bar, and found that the culprit was actually the Logitech Setpoint software! Once I killed it, no more CPU spikes... weird!
