I need some help and opinions on a new GPU. For quite sometime now I've been running a Nvidia 275GTX and having decided against investing in the next gen consoles just yet, I'd decided to invest it in a few new parts for my PC. Thing is, I'm struggling to decide which is best for my specific needs. I've been primarily looking at the AMD Radeon HD 7970 edition 1GHz and GTX 770 but this last one is quite expensive for me right now.. I was all set to get the AMD Radeon HD 7970 edition 1GHz but I keep hearing/reading a variety of things related to that card. Some waxing lyrically about what an awesome overclocker it is and others criticising how poor it's overclocking performance is along with other issues people have had with that card. Reviews seem split between high praise and underwhelming criticism. Below are a few cards I've been considering:

AMD Radeon HD 7970 1GHz Edition 3GB

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 With Boost 3GB

MSI GeForce GTX 770 Twin Frozr OC 2GB

MSI GeForce GTX 760 Twin Frozr OC 2GB

It's probably best I explain how I play games. It's mainly 1920x1080p. I'm looking for a card that will run the likes of Battlefield 3/Battlefield 4 to a satisfying good looking degree (at ultra if possible) and to game for the next 5 year everything on at least medium-high.

Quick overview of my system.

Cooler Master HAF X case

Asus P6T2Deluxe Motherboard

6GB Mushkin Radioactive 7-8-7-21 1600MHz.

Corsair TX 850 Watt

Intel i7 920 (I'm currently overclocking this to 4Ghz).

Hopefully some of you might be able to provide some light on which would be best. I was set for the 7970/7950 but have read some underwhelming (and a few highly praised) opinions of those cards so I just can't decide if I'd be better of with gtx770/760, I've always own Nvidia graphics.. . I know you must get sick of these sorts of questions, but know your doing a wonderful service in helping the likes of me and others

Thanks a lot for your help!

PS: my kinda view is 770>7970>7950>760 for the next 5 years to come :)

I have a similar system to yours. I have my eye on the GTX 760. Two things here I would suggest.

You have a long interval for GPU upgrades so maybe the 770 would be a better bet for a few years down the road. Right now, the 760 can do all of what you want but may begin to show it's age in 2-3 years.

You will need more system RAM going forward. You are likely using a 3x2GB tri-channel memory kit same as me. These kits haven't really dropped in price but you can buy a 12GB kit(3x4GB) for about $170.00. When I play BF4 on Medium, have a browser open and my Vent server+client open, I'm already near 85% system RAM saturation. You don't want full system RAM saturation to happen in gaming.

The GTX 760 is the better bang for the buck right now. The GTX 770 has about 20% better performance.

The thing is that i've found the 7970 for 180-200€ on second hand.. and the 770 costs 300€ new. Is the difference between the both worth it?
I've also seen some benchmarks comparing 7970vs780 and the 780 was 5% better in overall performance.. some games played better on the 7970.. What would you pick?
Will my cpu give me problems with any of these cards?
This will be my last upgrade on this system so thats why i want it to be a good card and but not very expensive.. it should last me the next 5 years before i will change my pc.. ive bough this back in 2009 so 10 years its fine hehe
Thanks a lot everyone for your help!
