Hi, I have an asus N56VJ....the HDD severely failed, I managed to get most of my files, but the disc is done and I need to replace it. How can I get windows 8 back on my laptop?

Asus wants me to mail my computer to them so they can reinstall it for me which will cost more than buying a retail version..what a joke.

any options for me?

asus claims there are no recovery discs for windows 8...and there is no product key label...i believe they store it on a chip on the motherboard...

Why is this a joke? Is the laptop still under warranty? If not, why would you expect Asus to install the OS for free?

You should have been making regular backups as well as a system backup to restore from.
Learn from your mistake in the future.

Lol, it's your responsibility to have made a system image in the first place not ASUS.

Or did they start offering complementary out-of-warranty backup service?

When you bought your PC, you didn't buy a Windows license. You bought an OEM copy distributed to ASUS.

If your laptop is under warranty you can get the recovery for ASUS itself., if not there are lot of site where u can download the OS img., and install yourself., Activation too,. You can get it., by 3rd party software or you can purchase a license in Microsoft., its just an options to it.,
