I just got a Phaser 6180 (Phaser 6180N).

It only wants to print certain things. I tried everything I could think of but found no fix and am baffled.

If I right click an image in IE and select print or print target, it won't print. It will show the pre-printing page with the Phaser 6180 set to print, the printer icon will show up in the taskbar and sometimes the printer lights up, but it won't print or show anything in the queue. But if I save the image as a .jpeg or something, it prints.

It prints if I make something in MS paint and just select Print in the menu without having to save the file.

It won't print paypal shipping labels.

Without digging deeper into the OS than I know how to or think is necessary, everything seems to be how it should be. I checked Windows 8.1 update but it didn't find a driver for it. I think it installed the latest driver by itself when I first plugged it in though. I think my optical drive is broken because nothing happens when I insert the driver CD or any other disc. Regardless, when I select Update Driver for the printer in device manager, W8.1 checks online and says 'the best driver is already installed'.
I have it plugged into USB. I troubleshooted the printer in control panel and it said it fixed something about possibly disconnecting from the USB but it didn't fix anything. I tried another USB port but I don't think it has anything to do with it.

Please help. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that when I tried installing the driver for this particular model from XEROX's site, it gets to the 'Discovered Printers:" part, it doesn't show the Phaser 6180 as discovered. Same thing that happened when I tried the link you gave.
So I select Advanced Search but it says 'if it's not found, then it's likely not on the same subnet as me' and to search for other subnets and then to enter the gateway and subnet of where I want to search for a printer which I know nothing about and don't think will help anyway.

Yes, it's set up as the default printer and is the only one.

I don't see an option to only print text when the pre-printing page pops up when I try to print (I changed everything around in those preferences also but nothing worked. Examples: I changed paper type and page sizes from envelope to letter head etc etc but now it's how it should be at Paper Size: letter 8.5" X 11" , paper type: plain paper).

I downlaoded the user guild for the printer may have found your issues fix. this printer sold as a network color printer. the default port is the ethernet port for the software and the printer. print out a configuration sheet see if the ethernet port is set as main printer port. if it is it give you network info. if you want your whole house to use the printer plug it into your router. in the admin menu there a usb and lpt settings. go to usb and set it as the default port and turn it on. if it still has an issue go in remove the printer software...and remove the printer..unplug the printer reboot your pc. plug the printer in when windows says it finds a new printer point windows to the newest printer drivers that are expanded on your pc. (last ones you download should have a driver folder or some ini files. dont run the setup because it looking for the printer on a network setup.

Than you so much. I got it to work.

The configuration print out said: Ethernet: Unknown (auto). I guess it was automatically set for that instead of USB.

I disabled and uninstalled the printer then rebooted to plug it back in to reinstall, hoping it would give a way to set it as USB, but nothing pops up in windows 8.1 and it installed by itself. Then when I checked windows update, it said I already had the best driver.

What made it work was downloading the second driver in the list of the XEROX global drivers page you listed, the one named "PCL5 64-bit Driver - Download and Install" worked instead of the one named 'Install from Web". The 'Install from Web' one always 'couldn't detect the printer' and then asked about possibly detecting it through subnets and gateways and stuff I know nothing about and don't think is for a printer I have hooked directly to my computer and didn't want to mess anything up in there.

The driver installed as it should and allowed me to change the port to USB. I'm still baffled though why they would program everything to not at least simply let me know that the port needs to be changed to USB in order to fully access the printer, I had already even gotten it to print but only certain things as mentioned.

Hi, Both PRINTERWR123 and SMORIZIO... I've been following your chain as I had the exact problems. (Phaser 6180 on Windows 8.1 (64bit) After your last suggestion (USB), I thought I had it solved, but.. strange I can only print "Test Pages" or any PDF file through Adobe Acrobat. Microsoft WORD says "Current printer settings are wrong", Likewise, using Powerpoint, Picasa, Google or Mozilla - again, not printing "Error occurred while printing", but I can keep going back to Acrobat and print fine? I've checked and rechecked the printer settings for each, just before printing, but always the same? I reboot, print via Acrobat, but not WORD. I looked at the XEROX site and found a document [Microsoft®Windows® 8 and 8.1Compatibility with Xerox® Equipment] There I found (page 5) ----
Phaser® 6180 Xerox® PS Color Class Driver 32 bit version of the
Windows 8.1 V3 PS driver requires an update to fix a secure print issue, expected Q1 2014.

BUT, I'm using 64 bit. So I don't think it applies...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. (P.S. I can unplug the printer and put it onto my old WINDOWS XP desktop and I can print anything, so the printer is fine.) Just cannot print from WORD, darn it... Another thing.... must point to the driver... If I leave the printer on the old desktop (XP), and set it as a sharable printer, then the same problem i.e. I can send a print via Acrobat, but not WORD, Powerpoint etc. - yet using XP I can print anything? Got to be something with the driver on the Windows 8.1 ?
