I have an old Dell XPS that was the best about 5-7 years ago. Maybe even older? Even running win7, it takes about 5-6 minutes to load all it's stuff after I put in my password. I hear that hard disk pounding away, for what seems like forever. Can I even put a SSD as my primary drive in this computer? Once up an going, it seems fine. Stats are: Intel Q6600 @ 2.4ghz, 8 mg ram, and 2 Geforce 9800 gt's, ( 2 ) 1tb drives

I would personally not bother with Dell but that's beside the point. Depends how much storage you need. If you need about 500gb or more space just get a new 7200rpm HDD. If you want super speeds and don't need much space get a SSD. The new Kingston V300 series is cheap and simple. If its for gaming I would go for a Corsair or maybe a Samsung. I personally op for Samsung.

Thank you Sobaka. Actually my days of buying Dell's are over. I am just looking to speed up this old system. Right now I have 2 tb of storage in this machine, guess I should of mentioned that in my original post, whoops. I do have a new small laptop that has a SSD and it seems instantaneous. Guess I am looking for a cheaper way out rather than dropping 5k with Origin for a new PC....

If it uses SATA, then yes you can. If it is PC100/133, then I wouldn't bother with a SSD.

That's a good question, not sure what the bus speed is on this. Checking in my devices I see IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Not sure if I am going in the right direction there though?

I heard Dell used to be nice back in the early days. I use a 250gb Samsung EVO SSD to boot up and for certain game files to improve latency. Terry's a pro. 2TBs is a fair bit (npi). Just get new HDDs and transfer the data if you ask me. I'm far from expert.
