IIRC Cat 6 have better screening from interference and is rated for higher speeds. Cat 5e should handle 100Mb/s just fine which is plenty for a home network. The speed bottleneck is likely to be your broadband line, not your home network.

Cat5e can do GbE up to 100 meters. Cat6 can do the same, but will handle 10GbE at 55m, and Cat6a can do 10GbE at 100m.
