Hi!

Just got a custom built computer. I have:
* Gigabyte G1.sniper z87 motherboard
* Intel Core i5-4670K
* Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9 Memory

In BIOS i noticed that the memory runs in 1333 MHz. If i change the memory multiplier to 16 so that the memory runs in 1600 MHz the processor starts to run at 3.8 ghz constantly instead of variable clock speed. I don't want to overclock it to 3.8 before i get a better cooler. Should i just run the memory at 1333 MHz?

here is what i think

your mobo supports 1600 by default, no oc required

your ram seems 1.5 v, again it should be recognized without any bios tweaking

you should not have to do anything explicitly to get it running at 1600

edit: on a second thought, have your upgraded your bios version to F2?

I think i have version F1 on my board. Will check it out when i get home today.

Your mobo (as do most all mobos) defaults to 1333, which any new DRAM you install will also default to, to set your DRAM to 1600, simply go into the BIOS find and enable XMP and select Profile 1

Will i get any noticable effects from running XMP and setting the ram to 1600 MHz?

Better performance than 1333, not a ton, but you'll be getting what you paid for, takes all of a 1 minute or so

Now when i turned on XMP the board changed the memory multiplier to 16 and then the system started running at around 3,8 ghz all the time instead of variable between 800 mhz to 3,8 ghz. Can't i run the memory at 1600 mhz without affecting the whole system?

Might be a BIOS bug, do you have the latest BIOS? Can try simply manually setting the freq to 1600 and just ensuring the timings are correct.

I found the problem. It was Samsung SSD-tools that had set a power-profile to high performance. Case closed ;)
