my computer specs are:
desktop board dh61ww i think
intel i3-2100 3.10ghz
action ac-500w power supply
4gb rams

i just bought a gtx 760 oc windforce 3x and i really wasn't sure what i was doing but i connected it, and then i connected in the 6 and 8 pin psu and connected 2 of the wires coming out of the 8pin and only 1 of the wire coming out of the 6pin ( there is no room for the second 6pin wire). i then booted my pc and updated the driver and everything was fine until i opened up thief and maxed out the graphics. i played for like 30min and while i was passing behind my pc to go pee, i could smell heat, like a warm thing, im not sure if thats because its still new or because i havent connected the 2nd 6pin. i then download GPU-Z to check whether its burning up or whats going on. this is when its idle: http://postimg.org/image/3rrv6koj9/ ,and this is after i play thief for some time: http://postimg.org/image/81vvdg0v5/ (while playing the frame rate kinda goes way down in certain places, not sure whether its the game or the gpu) i tried dayz and it was working fine on high graphics.
do i need to upgrade my rams?
do i need to get a new power supply (do i need to have all psu pins connected not just 3 out of 4)?
should have i reinstalled windows before i installed the driver?

any help would be appreciated. :)

You should have all available power connections connected on the graphics card. But dont worry about the warm smell, your temps are fine. Any frame rate drops will probably be down to your CPU. 8Gb of ram would be better for many new games also.

It will only bottleneck in cpu intensive games, but will still be playable. Most games are GPU driven so it will still be playable even when it is bottle-necking.

Yes, you can use adapters to connect 4pin peripheral connectors to 8 or 6 pin gpu connectors. I would thought they would have come with the card. Most do. 8GBs ram is needed or at least recommended.

i got the 6 and 8 pin connectors with the gtx 760 alright, but my power supply only has 3 cables that i can connect the pins to, so there is one just hanging loose (there's no place to put it in)

what if i play games while connecting only 3 not 4, will that put my vga at risk? i mean ill try to get a new power supply asap but that wont be for another week or so

Hmm, you will be able to get an adapter for one 4 pin peripheral molex connector to two to get the extra connector. I don't nothing about your PSU so assuming it's all on the same single 12v rail it should not be a problem

as a temp solution anyway that will work. 500W is recommended minimum, so when you do get your new psu next week get at least a 550w.

this is exactly what i have, the 8pin (right) has 2 cables out of it and they are both connected to the power supply, however the 6pin (left) has only 1 out of 2 cables connected to the power supply
(forgive me since im not really familiar with all the psu/psi thingies)

ok, i got it. Your good because i'm fairly sure it's all on the same 12v rail. If they weren't then you have a problem. It doesn't matter that one is not connected cause it has the same power draw as two 4 pin connectors, cause everything coming from the same source (the 12v single rail).

As mentioned before it might be the CPU not letting you play properly due to only having 2 cores. Try playing a game that is less CPU intensive to let your GPU stretch its legs. Load up Battlefield 4 if you have it, if not - get Planetside 2. Hopefully the games should be performing optimally here and then I would probably try loading a more CPU intensive game to be 100% sure. Something like.. Rome Total War? Maybe somebody has a better solution here..

We already figured that one out, OP is good to go, it will bottleneck on cpu intensive games resulting in slow frame rates , but will still be playable. On more GPU driven games it won't be a problem

I van't find info on your PSU anywhere, it's like it don't exist. Is 'Action-AC500 the actual brand name. I'm almost certain it has a single 12v rail, in which case your fine the way it is. One single 4 pin molex from PSU to the the 6 pin GPU connector will handle the current fine. Even if it's dual rail it should drive a 760 fine. If it puts your mind at rest go ahead and order the adapter.
