So I've had a i7 960 for about three years now (should have waited...). My temps have always been on the high side, but I've heard that's normal for this card. I'd like to overclock it slighty since it's getting older (around 3.6-8). I recently tried to redo the tim on my card to see if I could shave off a few degrees and ended up getting an evo (had a 212 before so same dif.) My temps actually went up! (From around 43-45 to 47-49 on the slight overclock). I think my case ventilation is fine and I've tried every method I've found of applying tim.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz

Hey

50C on a i7 at 3.6 GHz is not bad, there is nothing wrong with that.
Make a render or CPU max load test, see what temps it's getting.

If it's normal, it should get at 70C, if higher like 90 there's something wrong.

Btw, what method did you use while using the thermal paste? :) ( maybe some bubles have been created )

I've tried everything! Pea drop, credit card. Right now I used my finger, it seemed pretty smooth even if I know it's not the best method! I'll run prime 95 tonight, glad to hear my temps aren't outrageous though.

You can also check how you applied your thermal material versus this guide:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth/int/vl/intel_app_method_vertical_line_v1.1.pdf

It makes a big difference on many chips with orientation of TIM application and orientation of the cooler with the direct contact heatpipes such as the 212 Series. Like RulesSpew said, that's not a bad temp though. Different types of thermal material will perform differently also, so unless it is the exact same stuff as before (and new, not the same tube as previous) then a few degrees swing is totally normal.
