Possible virus, but virtually nothing will work

Hey all!

As of today, the 14th of March, 2014, I have had an issue with my PC. I am unable to run Steam, or any program apart from Spotify and Mozilla's Firefox.

This PC was built for gaming, and so, I cannot use it for what it was intended.

This PC is custom built, so I cannot restore to factory settings.

Another note, I have tried system restore, but it only reverts to when I first turned on my machine today, so there is no luck.

From what I have been told by a friend, using CPU-Z, there is no hardware faults, so I am convinced that a virus, or a malfunction of some kind has affected my computer.

I've been stressed about this for some time, and I'd really like a hand with this!

Thank you!

-Update 19:00 Will upload screenshots to assist if required.
-Update 19:43 Due to attempting to re-install my operating system (Windows 7 x64 bit Professional), my computer prompts me to direct it to a boot drive manually instead of automatically booting the master drive at every start up.
-Update 19:51 Steam, as well as MalwareBytes and AVG will load up in Safe Mode without issues.

Do you have a backup/System image?

Is their important data on the drive?

Download an run Malwarebytes. Next go into safemode and look at your startup processes, make sure there is nothing funky that is starting up with your computer. An easy way for people to check their startup is to download and run Ccleaner.
Also download an antivirus I suggest AVG as its free and pretty decent.

Hope this helped.

Also try to run Malwarebytes in safe mode. Another program to run would be combofix which should be run in safemode as well.
After you have run combofix and then malwarebytes you can run an antivirus scan on your computer. Use what ever antivirus you have installed.
This scan should be run in safe mode as well.
The last thing is make sure Malwarebytes and your antivirus are both up to date before running scans with them and do full scans as well.

I have nothing on there that I cannot replace.

The only issue is that I have a digital copy of Windows saved as a .iso file which I shall use in the event of having to obliterate everything and start afresh.

I have two hard-drives, one being a 64GB SSD Master, and the other being a 1TB HDD Slave.

The OS is on the SSD, whereas the HDD is used for all my other storage.

-Austin R, I've tried using Malwarebytes, it's removed some malware from my system, but something is still hiding, as I am unable to open anything. Nearly all my programs crash immediately after opening, which is becoming a real thorn in my side. AVG was my previous antivirus software, too.

I have tried using the safe mode antivirus with no avail earlier, it would delete the virus from my system, but as aforementioned in the above reply, something is still hiding.

I have tried to re-install my OS, as I am sure that it must be the cause, although the CD has come up with an error.

Thank you so far for helping guys, regardless of it being tried :)

Steam has loaded up inside Safe Mode, so progress is being made. I'm currently speaking from my additional laptop, as the forum requires a plugin on my main PC that crashed upon opening.

This may seem unrelated, but for a while, Java-based games such as RuneScape have had a lot of trouble loading up for a few months. I ended up swapping from Google Chrome to Firefox, because I had issues with rogue extensions installing themselves onto my PC.

That has been in my mind as a possible cause of the errors, but Chrome and the files have since been uninstalled.

ok so you can try and see if it is a particular program that is starting up that is the issue to do this go to start menu and type msconfig then hit enter.
In the startup tab I want you to disable everything then reboot your computer.
If you no longer have an issue starting stem then you should only enable half of the programs in the start up tab then restart and see if issue comes back.
If it does not then you can try the other half.
If it does then try half of the first half. Do this until you find the program that is causing the issue.

If you disable all of them and still have the issue then you can try a full barrage of scans to try and fix the issue.
I recommend running in safe mode : combofix, TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes, Super antiSpyware, and your antivirus.
then run CCleaner.
If this does not solve your issue then your best bet is a reinstall.

I have just tried this, both methods, and neither have churned out a result.

I still get the generic "x program has stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." error after immediate start-up of a program.

However, I appreciate your help, and thank you :)

I have attempted to burn my .iso Windows 7 installation file onto a DVD Disk, and I have had the error code: 0x80004005 appear, with a prompt saying that the image didn't burn successfully.

Any help with this?

Is there any error message when you run those apps?
Beside Malwarebytes and AVG you should run other cleaner. Sometime if you're system infected with a rootkit, Antivirus and Malwarebytes won't detect it.
Try uninstall AVG and install AVAST (good free software imo).
To scan for rootkit, download and burn Kaspersky Rescue Disk
