My friend has a 600w (it MIGHT be 630, I can't remember for certain) power supply, and is currently running an athlong XII 640, and is getting some bottlenecking. He is looking to upgrade the CPU without upgrading the power supply. I was looking between the FX-6300 and the FX-8350/8320 I know that his computer can handle the FX 6300 since it's 95w (same has his current CPU), but could it handle the 8350/8320? I've used different power supply calculator,s but I get some different results, so I was hoping you guys could guide me to what would be best

Look.....it will work..... presuming the board supports 120W CPUs. I have a 900W PSU, and never worry. If he is running more than one GPU, a PSU upgrade would be good. Other than that, an 8350 would suit you well, the $50 is worth the performance gain in my opinion.

I need to know the model of the power supply. Assuming it isn't trash like a logysis then it should be fine. Also I need to know the motherboard model to make sure it will actually support the higher power CPUs

@hello man
Or instead of spending $50 you could save that and just bump the clock speed up. The 8320 and 8350 are literally the exact same CPU just the 8350 is clocked higher from the factory and AMD makes more money that way. The only time where it would make since to buy an 8350 is if you are an extreme overclocker because the 8350 tends to be just a tad better binned.

look up the motherboard specs. Some older board designs won't handle 8 series FX cpu, some will with a bios upgrade, some will plug and play. That said, a lot will also depend on the chipset of the mobo. 760G chips aren't really designed for the FX cpu's although they will tolerate them with a bios upgrade. Don't look for too much of an OC before they become flakey. 970 series were a vast improvement, actually designed with the FX in mind, so OC is much more stable at higher clocks. 990FX are where the FX cpu's are truly at home, designed around the FX 8 core cpu's they have the best OC, power handling, stability, heat dissipation etc.
If the mobo is a 760G series, best option would be the FX-6300. At 95w the power draw, even with a decent OC, will be less than a decent OC with a 8320, and be more stable at a higher clock.
if the mobo is a 9 series, the 8320 with a good OC, is best option, unless you absolutely plan on no OC, then the higher clock of the 8350 would be better.
