I have a Windows 7 64-bit system which has a max of 16GB of RAM. The motherboard can hold 4 cards. Is there a performance difference in buying 2 8GB cards vs. 4 4GB cards?

Maybe, maybe not. If your motherboard supports quad channel memory then you would get improved performance by going with 4x4. If your motherboard doesn't support quad channel, then it makes no difference if you get 4x4 or 2x8.

If the motherboard takes 4 sticks of DRAM, normally it maxes at 4x4GB (i.e. 4GB sticks max) and usually don't support 8GB sticks....additionally 4 sticks is does not mean more is better, if 16 is max then yes need 4x4GB, though if this was a 32GB max mobo, for 16GB a 2x8GB WOULD be better than 4x4GB as less sticks is less stress on the MC (memory controller)

What??? No it doesn't. The motherboard IN YOUR SIGNATURE takes 4 sticks of memory and isn't limited to 4gb sticks. Listen if you don't know the answer to a question, it is okay to just pass on by without answering, you don't have to give wrong information.

Deuce65 - You must have missed the part where the OP states his motherboard has a max RAM limit of 16GB. Four slots means each slot can only accept 4GB RAM modules (for a max 16GB). Tradesman1's motherboard has a max RAM limit of 32GB. So of course he can use larger than 4GB RAM modules.

If you had read the response - it refers to the OPs mobo which has a max of 16GB, per OPs statement - I further went on and explained if it takes 32GB (YES, like my mobo(s) in my sig), then for 16GB 2x8GB is preferable to 4x4GB...Hope you understand it now.

Also to clarify, in your previous statement you said

"Maybe, maybe not. If your motherboard supports quad channel memory then you would get improved performance by going with 4x4. If your motherboard doesn't support quad channel, then it makes no difference if you get 4x4 or 2x8."

He's stated the mobo maxes at 16GB and off hand, can't think of a single X79 that is limited to 16GB, so that part is not even applicable, and as far as 4x4GB vs 2x8GB (if a mobo supports both) then there will be a ever so slight performance advantage to the 2x8GB (assuming equal timing specs) from less sticks and less stress to the MC.

And I agree completely, if YOU don't know the answer to a question, just pass it by.
