I was going to get myself the i7 4770 and someone suggested I get the Xeon E3 1230 v3 to save myself quite a bit of cash. They both use socket 1150. So you would think they can both be used on H87 or Z87 motherboards. I had one person step up and tell me that I could not get the Xeon processor because it is meant for C220 series chipsets. So I checked the datasheet and that is the only chipset it lists for it to be used with. You can see for yourself on page 9: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/xeon/...

Now there's people out there making the claim that the Xeon will in fact work with the H/Z87 motherboards....can someone tell the truth on this matter?

It can be used on h87/z87. Check the cpu support list for the mobo you are looking at.

Yes the e3-1230v3 is compatible with every LGA1150 motherboard on the market. And it is a GREAT buy for those who do not wish to overclock.

But its always good to check the motherboard's page on the manufacturer's site for cpu compatibility, people have suffered on rare occasions.
