You, unfortunately, seem to have several things stacked against you as far as upgrading the gpu goes. 1. Your system is powered by a rather old and unfortunately weak CPU. 2. Because you have an older system, I'm guessing you have an older and smaller PSU, probably around 300-350w, and this will severely limit your choices as most cards nowadays require at least 400w. The older generations of gpus are so out of date that they have become harder to find and therefore more expensive. It kinda sux. 3. RAM. At 2GB of physical RAM, your version of windows is a little hard pressed for speed. All modern games, though tailored mainly for the gpu, still use some system memory, and here again you will suffer some. Because of its age, again I'm guessing, its probably DDR2 800, or maybe 1066. This again is going to hurt.
Because of the serious restrictions your system has, you are going to find that in most of the newer games, even some 2-3 years old, you simply don't meet the required system minimum requirements. You'll be regulated to the games @ 5 years old, or older.
My advice would be to save your money, not upgrade the gpu or CPU, but instead save up your cash, sell the existing system, and get something newer and give yourself a running change at actually being able to enjoy the same games your friends play.
I guess pretty much this, OEM parts don't really bode well with High end components.

Pissing about I got this,
You don't actually need the 780ti (Costly, sure other GPU fanatics could get you a cheaper one but this will ensure 60+fps on all games even running 1440p which appears to be your preference)
Case - just a personal pick (Don't need a Full tower). Additionally you could
slam a SSD but cost a lot for a decent size.

Ram - I use this type of RAM 1600 in red haha the actual recommended spec for anyone is 1600 but you can always buy 2k+ clocked RAM.
CPU - I use it, it works well but if you want to overclock I recommend 4770K (K Series being unlock specifically for overclocking)
HDD - Regular I use it works fine for gaming, Caviar Black series are there fastest but I am sure you can find better if you want.
Power Supply - Highest grade for Corsair AXi being there most costly but you can go for there HX series which costs less but does the same job bar it's certification.
Disk Drive - Just a crappy one really, don't need a Disk Drive these days but it's always good to have one haha.
Motherboard - I again use this and it works fine!
Cooler - Not my area just picked one at random not to pricey also Air cooled unless you want water cooled CPU Cooler.
OS - totally up to you but suggest Windows 8.1 due to a lot of future features such as DX12 being forced to stick to Windows 8/8.1 and soon to be Windows 9 ETA 2015.
