I recently bought a new pc build that had a ASUS M5A78L-M LX motherboard and a AMD FX 4130 Black Edition 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor and it didn't come with the bios setup and I tried booting it from a USB drive but it didn't work. I NEED HELP!!!

The only way to turn it on to update the BIOS is by using any of the CPUs listed to work with the default BIOS which is 0205. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A78LM_LX/#support This is the CPU support list. You should have done more research before hand. 9/10 times, motherboards ship with stock BIOS and you will need to have access to an older processor either from a friend or maybe a local computer store will do it for you.

Hi

Get user guide from asus website
It will tell you how to get into bios and change boot order
There may also be a option to press F12 or F8 or similar to choose boot device on that occasion only
(F12. Is for Dells can't remember what key for Asus)

What do you mean by bios setup ? The instruction in user guide ?

Having seen the other posts
Is this a system you purchased pre built ?
Or did you build it from a set of parts ?

Regards

I don't think you two guys understand. His CPU is currently incompatible with his motherboard, meaning according to his PC, there isn't even a CPU. You can't access the BIOS without a CPU. You also can't install Windows off a USB when you don't have a CPU. In fact, you can't do ANYTHING without a CPU. I suggest you look at the problem again, because you guys clearly don't understand the problem.

I just noticed that it wasn't compatible with my motherboard so I might get the FX-6300 instead, which is compatible. So how would I boot it up then.

No, the 4130 will be compatible. Even though it's not listed there, the 4100 and the 4150 are. They are the same exact CPU, but with a different clockspeed out of the box. The architecture and everything is the same, you just need to updated the BIOS to the latest version. The FX6300 will be even less compatible because it's a newer generation CPU. You need to get access to an older Phenom II processor and perform a BIOS update or simply get a new motherboard.

AMD FX 4130 Black Edition is not a supported processor on the M5A78L-M LX. The motherboard is an economy model that doe not support AMD FX CPUs with a (TDP) Thermal Design Power over 95 watts. The FX 4130 Black Edition has a (TDP) of 125 watts and is not supported.

The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is the average maximum power a processor can dissipate while running commercially available software. TDP is primarily used as a guideline for manufacturers of thermal solutions (heatsinks/fans, etc) which tells them how much heat their solution should dissipate.

No... the 6300 will have the same problem.

Think of it this way. Your motherboard was made BEFORE the fx series of cpus was made. In short it doesn't know what they are. You need to upgrade the bios on the motherboard so it can even talk to an FX cpu and load up. in order to do that you need to get your hands on a PhenomII or old Athlon II (am3 socket) to get the board to load into the bios so you can update the bios to use your FX cpus.

You're very close to right, but as i said, his problem is his board doesn't recognize ANY fx cpus right now. In short even with a lower TDP fx cpus, he won't be able to load into the bios. Just take the part you said about the fx6300 and apply that to all older bulldozer cpus. His motherboard was released prior to ANY fx cpus... He needs a bios update.

Very true. That said the TDP of the cpu isn't really the main problem. read my above posts.

-Ok, so we have 2 issues at play.
1) the motherboard isn't recognizing ANY fx cpus
2) that cpu won't work with that motherboard anyway even if it WAS recognized.

So we have a simple mismatch of hardware. If the OP wants to keep that motherboard he'll need to do 2 things.
1) get a older PhenomII and update the bios himself, or return to the place of purchase and request their help in updating the bios to a current version (1401)
2) replace his cpu with a 6300 or other 95W tdp cpu.

Do you have any suggestions of which Phenomll processor I should get, because I want to update it myself.

So it doesn't matter which Phenomll processor I get? Just the cheapest one thats compatible with the motherboard.

pretty much. or you can just go with a 6 core 95watt PhenomII... and ditch the whole FX lineup... something like a 1055T (HDT55TWFK6DGR)... remember the 1055T comes in 2 versions... one is a 95W chip, the other a 125W chip... the one i listed (HDT55TWFK6DGR) is the 95W version; or a 1065T.

If that's not interesting, something cheap would work like the Athlon II x2 215, you can usually pick one of those up for $20-$30 on Ebay.
