The reason why i want to reformat is because i cant boot windows. Whenever I turn my pc on, it will give me 2 Windows XP Choices, the first one gives me an error code 0x0000007B, the second one gives me this:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

The dvd rom is set as the first boot but it always boot from the hard disk, so i try to disable the hard disk in the bios but it gives me disk boot failure, insert installation disk and press enter. Please help me, im using Asus P4B, 1.6Ghz, with 512Mb Ram and 80GB HDD

Solution

That should be changeable in BIOS. You can set the optical drive as the first boot device. That way it will always check to see if there is a disk in the drive before moving on to the HDD.
As an alternative to doing it that way, the Advanced Boot Options menu is accessed by pressing F8. That should bring up a menu...

If you mean re-install Win Xp, yes. As long as you have the disk. And still have the product key for activating. Format is something else. That is just erasing everything on the HDD and writing new tracks/sectors.

But as long as you are starting over, any thought of moving up to Win7? It is much more stable than XP.
