Hey guys,

So I've been spending tons of hours on this issue, nothing has been able to give me an exact result and I don't have a ton more time to spend on this issue. I have a Lenovo Y580 with a 64gb SSD and a 750gb HDD. Currently, I have Ubuntu installed on the HDD and nothing on the SSD. All of my user files on both Ubuntu and Windows 7 and Lenovo drivers have been backed up, so I don't need to worry about that.

My end goal is to be able to dual boot from the SSD, and have my Windows 7 and Ubuntu OS files located there and also some of the most used programs (Office). My HDD will hold all of my user data files, programs, etc.

Currently, I have 4 partitions showing up in gparted.
1. /dev/sda (59.63 gb)
- unallocated
2. /dev/sdb (698.64 gb)
- /sdb1: fat32, 487mb, msftdata
3. - /sdb2: ext4, 667.53 gb,
4. - /sdb3: linux-swap, 7.90 gb

However, sda doesn't show up anywhere outside of Ubuntu, i.e. in the BIOS settings or boot selection menu before loading the OS.

I'm trying to install windows 7 straight to the SSD, and then install Ubuntu after that. However the Windows 7 installer gives me an error when I try to install in that location.

So my question is, what do I need to do to prepare my SSD for it to be accessible by the Windows 7 installer? Is the problem in the partitioning of the drive, or does it not have the proper drivers to access it? I don't want to spend anymore time fuddling around until I have a clearer picture of what is actually going on with the dual-boot setup.

Any information you can give me regarding my situation will be much appreciated, thank you.

when you say windows installer gives you an error, what do you mean?

When you run the windows installer it should ask you to select a drive to install windows on. One the right hand side of that window, towards the bottom, there should be a hyperlink that says "advanced drive options." Click on that and you sould be able to select your 64GB SSD. Delete all of the partitions that currently exist on that drive, then create a new partition that uses the amount of space that you intend to use for win7. You should then be able to install windows.

Sorry I didn't specify the exact error number. But the installer error that I receive is literally "Unable to install at selected location" Error: 0x80300024. I said that the drive is currently completely empty as well, as in no partitions in it other than the one I created at installation time using the 'advanced drive options' partitioner.

Thanks! After removing the other drives, I was able to install windows 7. However, after installing Ubuntu, I get this error "No /root file system". I'm assuming this is because I reformatted it in fat32 form, when it needs to be ext4, correct?
