All righty then so I have a small issue with my current lan setup. First off my router does not support staticly mapping the lan network via mac addresses or anything for that matter (linksys WRT54G2). I could turn off the dhcp and set up every device myself or I can get a new router because this router also will not properly port forward anything at all. As in I'm trying run a small minecraft server for a few friends and can't get it to work because I can't open the ports for the life of me.

Is it possible to port forward from a computer and will a requested ip address from a computer over ride the routers attempt to hand out ip's. I run Fedora though not a big fan of the whole red hat thing and debating between unbuntu or mint.

Though I am quite tech savy try not to be vague and if you don't want to spell it out post a link with someone else spelling it out.

edit: if its not possible to fix the whole port forwarding thing from my computer then I'm looking for a reliable router that is less than $50 and will at the very least port forward properly.

That is getting to be a older router since it only support 802.11g. I used to have a similar one and I know you could port forward on it. You are always best off using static IP in configured on the end PC themselves just because it is simpler than messing with making a dhcp server do it.

If you have no issue with linux distributions load dd-wrt on the router you can then use pretty much the same methods you use on a unix box for dhcp and port forwarding.

You may still want to get a newer router. $50 will get you a very nice router when you consider you can get a 802.11ac router from tp-link for $99

Actually, I went the assigned DHCP way myself. Too many devices, some dual+ booting, and some going off-site to other networks.

I then went thoroughly overkill because my router requires you to type in the addresses instead of copy+paste, so have a MySQL db and a PHP script that outputs a config file for it :)

its supposed to be but trust me I've set the port that I need forwarded and I've opened the port in my firewall and I even tried to open up a range arround the port and it refused to actually open and be accessable from outside my network.
