Recently picked up a an A10 7850k trying to build a small Mac Mini/PC type clone with the ability to game @1080p.

I picked up a Streacom FC1OD chassis. My goal was to incorporate blu-Ray SSD and an IR receiver. Quickly had to choose between gaming or htpc without gaming.

First and foremost size constraints. In this case the only compatible cpu cooler was the Scythe Kozuti. It was only 40mm tall but the drawback was that it blocks one ram slot even with low profile ram. I then tried the Noctua lH9a fit perfectly...however it can not handle the 95w cpu and it is only rated for 65w.

The CPU cooler brought on the next revelation. The 7850k needs high speed ram to achieve the most bang for buck. Using BIoshock Infinite as the test game I started with 1600mhz ram. I could barely get 20fps on 720p. 1080p @very low was 15 or less. I then ordered 2133 and 2400 ram. At 2133 I was able to hit 30fps on 720p medium to high easily. Jump to 1080p low and hovered around the 25-30fps range. 2400@1080p low I was hit 30fps easily however it was behind the numbers I saw posted and I couldn't understand why. I switched the CPU cooler and went to 2sticks of 2400mhz 8gb and the boost was almost 10fps difference. At low settings I was getting 40fps easily and sometimes higher depending on where in the benchmark it was focusing. I've read in many posts single vs dual is not that big a difference....when it comes to the A10 it makes all the difference in the world.

So knowing I needed dual memory I had to get creative with the cpu cooler. I used a Dremel and edged down the fins to allow clearance. Took a while but I was able to clear the ram. Mt temps are low 40s at idle and mid 50 or so on heavy gaming.

I'm powering the case withe 160w pico PSU with. 150 power brick. I am going to switch to a 192w brick soon. I will try and post some pics shortly. I'm going to add an additional fan to the cooler and vent the lid for better air flow.

Anyone have any other experiences with the 7850k?

AMD APU need dual channel memory for the best result. i have A10-5800K. with single channel 3dmark GPU score about 3300. with dual channel the score increase to 5600. the idle temp with xigmatek achilles is 47C. full load about 75-78C. the best option is use dual channel 2400mhz ram.

I definitely agree. Coming from Intel world never really paid attention to dual vs single. However I was pleasantly surprised by the speed.

Now I'm struggling with driver compatibility. Tons of crashes on my setup so far.
