cant install game. help please

so i got this game and i installed it, but when i started it up it wasn't running right so i tried to reinstall it. so i went to uninstall and when i went to install it again and clicked on the setup.exe but when the install menu opened only the uninstall button was highlighted not the install button. so i tried deleting all the related folders and doing a system clean to delete any left overs and tried restarting the computer but nothing has worked. i think this has something to do with the register keys still being there, cause i have had this happen to me on microsoft flight simulator so time ago but i wouldnt know where to find that specific reg key. any suggestions?

yes... registry.

The easiest way to delete the enntry (and lie to Windows about and installation) is the use Ccleaner and delete the installation entry from the Registry.

Download Ccleaner (cnet is quickest)
Install it
Open it
On the left are a series of selection areas.

Cleaner - temp file removal, this is also what gets activated if you right click the Recycle Bin and click "Run Ccleaner" Adjust the settings to include (Windows tab first)
Windows Error Reporting
DNS Cache
Old Prefetch

(Application tab)
any unchecked boxes from the "Multimedia" entry down

Now (lower right) "Run Cleaner"
Repeat until "0 bytes removed" results returned

This is the "first run cleanup routine I always run... Now go back to your Browser entries...

This is the "first run cleanup routine I always run... Now go back to your Browser entries and uncheck "Internet History" and "Cookies"... Also in the "Windows" tab I unselect the "Windows Explorer" Run and Other Exploerer MRUs

Move to "Registry"

Click "Scan for Issues"
Once complete click "Fix selected issues..." I've never had an issue with this causing a problem... However, if you are paranoid, let is backup the Registry before the fix step, then select "Fix All Selected Isues"... again, repeat until the found items repeat or nothing is found.

Tools section
"Uninstall" Here we have all the installed application as you would find in the Control Panel. Find the offending application and try to run the uninstaller, if/when it fails, this time do the "Delete Entry", this removes it from the Registry.

move to the "Startup" section. Here you can effectively turn off startup items by Disabling them. Typically, I turn off everything that is NOT hardware related or Security related.

Thats it... Reboot.

Now try to install the application.

Was this more than the basics... yes... however it will be a quicker and cleaner system for doing this as well as being able to install the AFU application.

yeah, this should have worked but it didnt. my guess is cause i got the game from a very popular but illegal website in hope to try something out new. but that isnt the case for all games. for example i bout gta sa on steam and it doesnt work at all on my pc nor did the illegal version. my computer is just weired. idk. thanks anyways.

@ JackNaylor --- hmm... I've used Ccleaner since version 0.8x without a single instance of anything bad happening in the Registry cleanup. This includes XP, Vista, Win7, Win 8, Server 2003, and Server 2012. Something must've been really aFU before you used it for it to cause issues.

@qwertyu8 - Steam installs are different tan most installs. You may need to uninstall all the Steam Games AND Steam itself, run the Ccleaner as above, and also go tru and delete the Steam and Stam Game folders from the system by hand, reboot and start over with Steam installation...

If ya just dealing with gaming / home app rigs, prolly not an issue as many games you can even cut and paste from one drive to another and they still work. But no developer has access to all software .... there **is** a reason why they suggest backups before editing. Application of Service Packs normally doesn't bork anything either but Sp2 for XP rendered every AutoCAD station with license management unusable leaving firms with rows of CAD Operators sitting at their workstatioins twiddling thier thumbs. Ccleaner also likes to remove file extension references it hasn't seen in a while which is a problem for those that need to run legacy programs like Lotus 1-2-3.

For the systems "here in the building", I rarely need it...... systems that come in the door, I usually have no idea what happened to them, they can be a bit more challenging.

As for Steam, I usually can solve 98% of issues with a right click on the game, go into properties, check file integrity.
