I have a netgear dual band wireless router.
Why won't my laptop recognize and/or list both? One of the bands is significantly faster then the other, and I would really like to access the faster one. It only is seeing the slower one and connecting to it.
I have a lenovo yoga 2 pro which is running windows 8.1
My phone recognizes both bands and I don't have a problem connecting to either one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

You laptop likely does not have a dual band card and can only see the 2.4g band. Neither is faster they are exactly the same unless you happen to have a 802.11ac router. They are just different frequencies. The only reason one may appear faster than the other one is that there is less interference from neighbors but that is more related to what your neighbors are doing than the technology itself.

In most cases the 5g band does not have as much coverage so in that regard it might actually be slower if you have a number of walls between you and the router.
