I have an Alienware Aurora r4 (2010 model I believe) and it has a 525w PSU. the psu has one huge plug in the back that contains all the wires in one. it's a square plug with all the power cables running to it. I need to upgrade it to at least a 650w for my new geforce gtx 770. Do I need to buy a dell psu with one of those on the back or can I buy any 650w psu (with separate, smaller pin wires). If so, is there an adapter so I wouldn't have to run all the cables throughout the pc? And if I were to buy an alienware PSU, could I just swap out the boxes and keep the cables inside of my case hooked up how they are?

I think the wiring harness for the 1000W PSU would have more PCI Express Supplementary power connectors. Probably more (6+2)-pin PCIe connectors.

Ultimately the decision is left up to you on whether or not you want to experiment.
The wiring harness is proprietary. If you don't want to replace the wiring harness you only have one choice and that is to buy a higher wattage version of the PSU that were used in the Alienware Aurora. Some customers found that their R4 shipped with an 875W PSU even though the shipping info stated that a 525W PSU was installed.

Those that were willing to replace the wiring harness have found that they had to try several different brands just to be able to find a PSU that was able to fit properly in terms of PSU's depth.

If this is your current PSU:

Notice the depth of the 1000W model compared to the 525W model. Do you think the 1000W model will fit into the Alienware Aurora r4's PSU cage without interference with the hard disk drive bays?

The 875W model appears to be the same size as the 525W model:

For the price of the 1000w, I'm willing to remove 2 of my hard drive bays to make room for it, but I do have what seems to me to be ample room for a bigger piece. but the only thing I am really unsure about is whether or not the wires I have will work with the 1000w psu. It should work, shouldn't it?
