Hello,

I'm looking for a CPU for an upcoming build, and had decided on an i3 4130. The machine will mainly be used as a home/office PC, just doing light tasks such as web browsing (15 or so chrome tabs) etc etc. I may on a rare occasion play a LIGHT game such as FIFA 14 (nothing too intensive). I had decided on an i3 4130 with a 7770. Would I be better of going with a i5 4440 using its iGPU? Or an FX 6300 with a 7770?

Thanks.

i3 4130 with the 7770 should be more than effecient.
That is very light use, and doesn't require the huge CPU performance.

If you are just doing light tasks then I would stay with the i3 with the 7770. If you played games more often than the FX 6300 would of been more suitable.

It is very light use, but I want to future proof it as much as possible... I want it to be run comfortably for the next 4-5 years at least, which is why I thought of the i5 instead. Would the i3 hold out for at least 4 years?

for 4 years? i don't know about future. but I think 4 cores will be better.

For general computing(office programes and webbrowsers) an i3 will still stay future-proof.

if u dont play heavy games than i3 is future proof

In my personal opinion, there is no such thing as future proofing, not will a computer last that long. I have no doubt that the computer you build with those specs will last as long as you need it, while doing what you built it to do. While a computer does its tasks well, it will always be that your needs are changing, and you will most likely find that your computer just doesn't "cut it" anymore.

For example: In early summer 2011, I bought a new ASUS laptop after my netbook was stolen. It had an i3-380m, 320GB HDD, a 47Wh battery, 3GB RAM (which I later upgraded to 8) and integrated HD graphics. It was agreat computer at the time for me, and I used it almost every day. Last year, I had started to get into gaming, and quickly found how it was inadequate, first in graphics, then battery life at school, then HDD space as the partitioned C: drive hovers between 15-20GB often while I filled the D: partition with executable games and movies.

I know that laptops and desktops do not compare very well, but the general idea is the same. Either way your best bet is probably an Haswell i3, and the graphics card you wanted as well. and see where you go from there in years to come.

I understand that a computer will only last as long as it meets the users demands. However, would a FX-6300 (OC'd to 4.5 ghz maybe...?) last me longer without an upgrade than an i3 4130?

The cost required to get an FX 6300 to that level, you would be better of getting an i5 4440 and an H81 motherboard. Price would be similar.

I can get the FX 6300 for £69. People have managed to get it to approx 4.4 ghz with a CM Hyper 212 Evo which is £25. Total cost is therefore about £95. An i5 4440 costs £127. An i5 is just out of my budget.

Never mind overclocking then. Would a FX 6300 last me longer than an i3 4130 or not?

You have to factor in the more expensive motherboard as well. That was my point. The overall platform cost would be close. FX 6300 by itself isn't bad. I would rather have an FX 8320, though.

I could go for an i5, but I would have to drop the 120gb SSD that I was planning to go for...
