It comes down to the two top of the list laptops and I'm having trouble deciding...

I like the GT70's steelseries keyboard as well as its GTX 880M card, the only downside is that it doesn't have the 16 gigs like the Asus, and the 256 gig SSD. I personally don't mind the SSD part since I already have a 250 gig samsung evo that I can put into the GT70. The factor which I dislike about the MSI is it's bulkiness, and the battery life is shorter than the Asus. Also, being a single fan cooled laptop, I'm pretty sure it will have heat problems while gaming, as it is running two high end components sharing the same cooler.

The Asus However, uses a dual fan cooling system which makes it run much cooler. Its stealth design is what put me towards it. The downside of it is that it doesn't have the GTX 880 as the MSI, but it does offer 16 gigs of ram instead of 12. Now personally, I don't ever think i'll use 10 gigs of ram ever, so the extra 4 gigs doesn't really matter to me, but still, 16 is more appealing than the 12. Another downside on the Asus, it lacks the multi-colored led back lit keyboard, and it doesn't have a blu-ray reader. However, the Asus does come with 256 Gigs of SSD, so I don't have to rip the Evo out of my desktop.

I'll be using the laptop for college, and for gaming. I would also like to plug it into my TV and watch movies with it. I've heard that the MSI has better onboard speaker and sub than the ASUS, but It's not really confirmed.

I know there is the JZ version of the ROG series, but I can't spend an extra 500 dollars just to get the 880M.

So tell me which one you guys think is better, Asus Rog or the GT 70 dominator. Or is there something else that has factors of both the MSI and Asus? Anyways I can't go out of the $2,000 cap so anything under 2k is fine with me.

I'm also in the same boat! I'm currently looking at the more downgraded version (MSI GT70's 870M & Asus G750's 860M both about ~$1400) and it is very hard to decide! I have a SteelSeries Apex keyboard so the GT70's keyboard is close to being like it! I love how you can have profiles, macro keys, colors, and such more! But yet my laptop is the Asus G75VX so it's still a hard choice to choose. I've never tried MSI but they do seem pretty interesting

Seems like we all are on the fence for this type of gaming rig. The Bigger SSD on the Asus is pretty enticing. It is a tough one. I wish I could set them beside each other and compare. I am leaning toward the MSI for some reason but still not sure. Also I am looking at XoticPC to purchase. Do any of you know of a better option?

I've actually seen more complaints with asus rogs than msi g series. Although it could probably be due to the fact that more people by asus? I was going to buy the asus g750jw but then i found the msi gt 70 dominator. Went with the msi as it has better hards. Did really like the look of the asus though. Mine will arrive in a couple of weeks and hopefully it'll be okay. Will be shipping it outside of the US so the warranty won't work:(

I spent a week looking for the best laptop for the price. I went with the MSI GT70 Dominator Pro 890.

Overall, it has better GPU and CPU. Besides that, it has good reviews as well. The less RAM is not a problem for gaming. You only need 8 to run the best modern games anyhow.

So if you want performance over a fast load up screen with the SSD, then go with the MSI. Also, the speakers should be better in the MSI.

Hope this helps.

I purchased a G750JS-DS71. Upgraded the screen cause it's only 150 bucks.
Couldn't justify paying 500 extra for only 10% extra performance over previous generation. The GF870 is about 30% faster than it's corresponding previous generation however, which made the most sense.

There are some things you can change easily and there are some that you cant change easily once you invest into a machine.

Ram and hard drives area easily changeable.

My reasoning for investing in the Asus is because the cooling system gives me more headroom vs the MSI. I'd rather have 2 very warm fans that one blazing hot one. That way i know that my laptop won't border on the redline if and whenever i'm gaming without an external cooling pad.

Some may justify with the keyboard and speakers. Well, i highly doubt ppl look at speakers and keyboards that much. Those two me are none essential considerations. You're right that they could be deal breakers, but that's dependent on all else being equal.

For me the foremost essential considerations goes towards GPU, CPU, SCREEN, RAM, HARD DRIVES, BUILD QUALITY, KEYBOARD, SPEAKERS. in order from the most important towards the least important.

If you don't intend to upgrade within the first year or within the first few months. The 880 vs the 870 would both be bottlednecked by the CPU and the HDD more than anything else. Sure you'd be able to squeeze a bit more framerate out of the 880. But then, would it make sense to feel depressed with overall speed of your rig if you have a 880?

Anyways i don't know, YMMV. I'm only sharing my justification and reasoning behind my choice. The choice is still up to you guys.

Btw, i got mine from GenTech. Ken Lee is amazing to deal with. :) Very nice chap who responds to my emails and inquiries.

I'm sure my previous response should have adequately covered the logic behind why i picked the Asus over the MSI.

On top of that, the Asus is now equipped with all copper heatsinks. Which means better efficiency at heat exhaust.

The msi no matter what they do will be limited by the phyisical limitation of having a single fan being shared across two high performance parts which produce considerable amounts of heat. While of course the GPU is the egg cooker here, and the CPU remains considerably less hot compared to the GPU, the sum total of both heat output is the real concern. Plus having so much heat concentrated towards one area of the laptop, which is the right rear port where your hands tend to be if you're a right hander mouse user just didn't sit well with me.

to answer directly to what you said.

no it doesn't adequately help with dissipating heat away from the heat assembly fast enough. If it does contribute at all, it would reach a plateau in terms of performance ability based on the lower surface area of it's heatsink assembly compared to the asus.

Area vs area, all things being equal the surface area becomes the determining factor.

I wanted to report that Costco has an Asus G750JS-RS71 (online at costco.com) for $1399.00.So far as choosing between the gaming rigs, Asus has software called 'GPU Tweak' and you can overclock the 870 to near 880 performance with very little trade-offs. In my experience it only adds between 2-3 c in temp. I can say that the two channel cooling was a huge decision factor for me personally and I can verify that the laptop does indeed stay very cool by comparison. Also, buying a laptop from Costco is, in my opinion, the absolute best way to buy a laptop as they have a 90 day return policy as well as included concierge service (basic tech support) in addition to the manufacturers warranty.. It is also important to me that the warranty be international as I am in Europe for 6 moths out of the year and hardware is much less expensive to purchase in the US as it is in the European Union.
I know everything is subjective and relative to the perception of oneself, so this is just my 2 cents.

Here is my point of view. I have been involved in the IT industry since about 1996-1997 and I used to build computers and I have dealt with Asus and MSI along with biostar. Back in the late 90's they all just made motherboards. I personally had great experience with both Asus and MSI. I actually think MSI is a better company and produce a better quality product from personal business experience with both MSI & Asus motherboards.

Now onto the laptops. A lot of people like desktop computers over laptops because of the fact that they can change components in the future. With laptops you are kind stuck with what the manufacturer includes from day one.

I am buying the MSI - GT70 DominatorPro-890 over any Asus for the simple reason of this. It comes with an 8 Gb video card. The video card can not be changed on any laptop. Big deal if the Asus has a SSD or 4 more GB or ram... It is SOOO EASY to add an SSD or ram to the MSI. Now try to update the Video card on the Asus! LMAO never gonna happen! With the requirements the games made in this day and age are you want the best video graphics card you can get because the ram and also hard drives can always be upgraded! The video card can not!

Well good luck guys but I will be enjoying playing just about ANY game in ULTRA mode thanks to the MSI - GT70 DominatorPro-890 forget about trying this with the Asus models!
