In both GPU-Z and MSI Afterburner it shows that my GPU core clock is constantly jumping from 500mhz to 750mhz while I'm at my desktop.

I have a HD Radeon 4870, is there any reason as to why this is happening?

Thanks

Yes, the core is jumping because you are demanding more from it so it goes faster, but then the speed isn't needed so it goes back down again and then back up so on and so forth. Yous card is jumping from one clock to the other becasue it needs to runs at a medium speed and it only has a low and high speed. You should also get a new graphics card. (AMD R7 260x)
