GTX 580 vs. HD 7870

So yeah, I've heard mixed things about these cards. I realize that the gtx 580 has terrible efficiency and requires a power supply upwards of 600 watts. But strictly speaking only regarding performance in games, which card is better for 1080p gaming. Like is the 580 significantly better than the 7870 or just a little or what?

My little brother has a GTX 580 and even I think its still a beast of a card.

580 is better and preformance is closer to 7950 than 7870. I would advise you to get 7870 as it will run a lot cooler than 580.

Even a stock GTX 580 is faster than the fastest 7870. The GTX 580 is also made by Nvidia, so your satisfaction level is bound to be a little higher in terms of the driver support and the exclusive technologies you have at your disposal.

I already have an hd 7870. I was just wondering do you think it would be worth selling it to purchase 580

If you have 7870, I won't trade for a gtx 580. I would say at least an 7970/280x or 770 would be a significant upgrade. The performance between is not great enough for you to swap them.

So to sum it up, the 580 is a little better and you might get around 10 extra fps or so?

Yea I agree with Ak47 upgrading to a GTX 760/770 or r9 280x would be a better upgrade, if you get a GTX 580 you wont see any improvement in gaming.
