I am in a loop and confused and cannot find the answer I am looking for. I have a windows XP computer that is powerful enough t handle windows 7 professional perfectly fine. My question is, the full retail is $225-$335 range while a coworker said to em I can do a clean install with an OEM disc. Is that possible? Also, I can buy online oem reinstall discs for $10-15 online but no coa. Can I still install windows 7 and use my windows xp coa from my desktop to activate? or should I just go ahead and buy the same oem disc but with a coa for $40 dollars more. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you need a license... Unless it is a Dell and can find the Dell win7 disks, no new license needed.

My computer is a Dell and disc would also be a Windows 7 Dell branded OEM no coa

You have XP.
You want to install Windows 7 Pro.

1. Why 7 Pro vs Win 7 Home Premium?
2. Your 'XP COA' is of no consequence, unless you buy an 'upgrade' license.
3. Windows 7 Pro does not cost $225-$335.

I just did that XP to 7 using a Dell Windows 7 HP disk... I just needed to download the newer drivers that Windows did not pick up... Was one of the easiest upgrades I've done

That's what I was told that it was easy to do so with OEM discs my only question was whether I could use my coa or need a new one. Looks like I can use my coa

Why no new license on Dell?

Dell hardware is keyed in the bios to a license built into the Dell image disks.

I use 1 set of disks for all the Dell systems I work with. I never need to put in an individual license key. All I need to do is get the proper drivers from the Dell site for the specific system... Use the Dell service code on the case for that.

you need Dell Windows 7 OEM install disks. Occasionally it will not work... It is a hardware reference that disables the ability for the older systems to activate the Win7 licensing.
