How can I save my OS

Okay so I have busted the HDD on my dell inspiron laptop and I'm hoping there is a way that i can get a new HDD and save my old OS. All I have to work with is the product key on the bottom of my laptop. Can I call a support line and give them the product key and have them send me a disk so I can put it on my new HDD? Or are there any other possible options? I'd hate to have to get a new OS and HDD if I can keep from it.

Dell is usually good about sending recovery disks.. just call and order them for the specific service code of your system. They may cost $30 or be free.... I have had both.

But will I be able to do this with a new HDD? Because the one I have currently is shot.

yes... with any sized one you can install in the Dell hardware. the Dell OS disks and hardware keyed to Dell and all you need is the Recovery Disk with the OS you can get from Dell... Unfortunately, if it came with XP, they will not sell or give you 7... You might be able to find a local repair shop that is noce enough to let you run one of theirs right in the shop for little or nothing...
