I need a new CPU and am on a budget. I dont need the latest and greatest but need more HP.
Current specs:
gigabyte h61m-ds2 v 2.1
g620 pentuim dual core @ 2.6ghz with stock cooler
8GB pc3-12800 ( 2x4gb Kingston )
Thermaltake 500 watt PSU
ATI HD 4870 x2
250gb sata hdd and 1tb sata hdd
win 7 x64 ultimate
i primarily game on my Acer X233H monitor via DVI cable, sometimes on my Sony FWD-42PV1
I dont really do hardcore gaming, only a few hours a week ( like 10 or less honeslty) but use my computer everyday for everything else including light 3d rendering. I think the toughest game i play is need for speed rivals and i can set all to medium or high and play pretty nicely but every once in a while it stutters. I have been looking at an i5 ( sr00q) on ebay for around 150. In all honesty 150 is more than i am able to spend at the moment. Id love to have an i7 but almost 300 is definantly out of reach. Can i OC an i5 on a stock cooler ? or would i even have to to play the games i want without glitching? My GPU isnt DX 11 capable so im capped at which games i can play anyways. Oh Case is an Antec 900 PLENTY of airflow fans are all on max settings

you're right, the 4870x2 has great mem bandwidth... but that's because it's a dual gpu card... and they're effectively doubling the bandwidth by having gpus on the same board.

Remember, there is more to gpu performance then memory bandwidth. There is also the memory clock speed, and the gpu clock speed, and the number of shaders and cores... and so on and so forth. GPUs are sorta tricky to figure out with just numbers on a peice of paper, this is why there are dozens of websites dedicated to gpu bench-marking.

As for your goal of grabbing a new cpu... see if you can't get your hands on a non-k i5... like a i5-2500 (non k)... it will work in that motherboard and you should be able to get one cheap online. Hell i just searched ebay...
you can't overclock any intel on an h61 motherboard. and if 150 is out of reach you probably shouldn't be looking to upgrade your cpu. That said your gpu sorta isn't good and might have more to do with your gaming issues then the cpu.

A simple hd 7850 or r7-265 or gtx 750ti or gtx 650ti BOOST would all probably give you almost twice the performance of your current gpu at a fraction of the heat, noise and power drain; you can probably get a used GTX 660 for less then 150 as well.

personally i think the change in gpu will bring you more performance increase then and sub $150 cpu you can stick on that motherboard.

spec for spec i cant understand how my cxard is at fault but i am new to gaming in general. the card has 2gb GDDR5 and 512mb bandwidth. Honestly im the idiot who picked the card out lol. i went to ebay put in my price range ( which was 125) and compared what came up. the one i got seemed to have best specs. This card replaced a msi afterburner gt 610 with 2gb gddr3? was direct x 11 but was a HORRIBLE card for anything but playing video. Now that i just bought an outdated card and am stuck with it, i guess ima ghave to pony up for an i5 then save for another card. i know my cpu is WAY behind and im hesitant to retire a card i JUST got ( even if it shoulda been retired before i got it lol). Any particular i5 i should look for or will any work? Also i have 2 more 2gb sticks of ram so im thinking of another board, maybe a mobo/cpu bundle. Any suggestions? bad part is i just built my freind a 6 core amd with a huge quadro for his 3d design for about 75 more than i have into mine! wish i had the money all at once cause i woulda ordered 2 of em.
