formating 4tb for use with GOFlex

Solution
Absolutely no 3rd party software is required at all, people can recommend whatever that like but unless they can tell you why, or what issues they are suggesting such software will avoid, you can treat them with suspicion. If you don't know anything about partitions then you won't need any of the additional features or functions that such software provides and so as a novice user, you are simply opening yourself up to a higher chance of user error.

Keep it simple.

Same as you would for use with windows. GPT partition table and NTFS filesystem - partitioned into one or more volumes, as you see fit. All it is is a SATA to USB interface, sold inside a plastic box and named for marketing purposes.
