I recently formatted an old 500gb hdd, and when i restarted my computer, the drive letter was unnassigned and the drive is now unreadable. i followed the tutorial on the microsoft website, but when i right click the hdd, the only option that comes up is "help". it has no way to assign the drive letter.

Do you have a windows disc? os example win 7? unhook all hard drives in your pc make sure power is off use the said drive hook it up plug everything back in turn power on go to bios reset everything to defAULTS .... reboot with windows 7 in your dvd drive and windows should pop up and you will have the option to format it ..

this link will provide you with a lot of free programs to format your drive.

Also you could use EaseUS Partition Master Free, or Paragon. I have had them find a drive that windows didn't and format/partition to my hearts content.

you're welcome, glad it worked

If you still have EaseUS installed, right click on the drive/partition and have it run partition check (just curious with problems so far), will run windows chkdsk, surface test, and partition properties test. Just a worry wart here.

Again, glad you got it solved
