I've been switching back and forth between the two cards and cannot make up my mind. I just want to know which would perform better on my i5-4670k for modern high end games

Solution
Both the cards shall perform well on those games but my personal recommendation is the 280X since it gives you that price/performance ratio and 3GB VRAM is not that advantage but it is futureproof when games shall require it

Depends on a lot of factors. What games will you be playing? What resolution will you be using? How long do you want the card to go before an upgrade? Do you plan to SLI/CrossFire in the future?

I plan on playing games like BF4, Crysis 3, Farcry 3 and other high end games like that. I'll be playing in 1080p.

the 770 is all you need, despite amd optimizations

If your happy to go AMD than yes 280x, i can totally recommend. I got two of them. This could have some significance in future gammes also, given console mainstays are all on AMD hardware and like when BF4 was ported over to PC it played slightly better on 280x. Porting to PC is an increasing trend also, because consoles is where the money is for developers.

Then why can i tell the difference easily between gtx 680 and 280x at 1440p?

The difference is not caused by VRAM the 2gb vram is enough for 1440p especially when you have got a powerful GPU like the 770 and the difference between 280x and gtx 680 in games is significantly due to its shader configuration rather than its VRAM

Then we will have agree to disagree, I regularly hit 2.3 vram on a single 280x, as do many others. That is not even on max settings. The general consensus is BF4 on 1080p performms better with 3gbs vram. Even if benches don't bare that out.
