Laptop randomly shutting down only when gaming.

Hi guys,

I've been having this problem for a while now, and I've decided to finally come here for answers. To start with; yes, shock horror, I'm using a laptop to play the game! I have been for two years without issue until a month ago, running the game on high graphics. (Now playing on medium for optimal performance.) So no solutions with "just buy a desktop" please. The people here look really understanding and kind but I've had less than positive experiences with others before, of course.

Anyway, like I said, this has been going on for a month or so. Two months ago, I started having to plug in my laptop for the game to run, as it would inexplicably shut down when playing when running on battery; when plugged in, it was fine. About a month ago it started shutting down either way, lasting about 30 seconds and then shutting down when not plugged in, and then about ten minutes now when it is, typically faster to do so in a raid or PVP environment which is more demanding.

I thought it could be overheating, as my laptop was indeed getting hot. So I opened it up, cleaned out the fan, and now the fan seems normal again. When my laptop shuts down, it's just the normal, fairly low temperature (to the touch) I've had for the past few years. So I've ruled out overheating by fan, but not by other causes. Truth be told, as I said I'm not overly tech savvy with the technical things and I wouldn't know how to check that.

I can't work out what could be causing the laptop to shut down, especially when it only occurs during SWTOR and gaming and is otherwise running perfectly. Any solutions, or people also experiencing this issue, would be very much appreciated! There are similar questions online, though most are overheating problems, few are gaming exclusive, and none I've found seem to have a decent solution. If not a solution, then if anyone could speculate a diagnosis I would still be thrilled.

And, above all really, can it be fixed?!

UPDATE: Not even lasting ten minutes when plugged in now, averaging about two or three with shutoffs on the loading screen happening too. I discovered this only when getting the readings, as I'm trying to avoid trying in case I further damage or stuff something up.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I would actually run it and check temps using actual monitoring software just to be sure (not just the feel of the outside of the computer) b/c it is possible that the CPU is overheating so quickly that the case doesn't have time to heat up. And if your laptop has a discrete graphics card, you'll want to see what the temp is on the GPU as well.

You can use Real Temp http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ for CPU monitoring and GPU-z http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ for GPU monitoring. If possible, I would connect an external monitor to your laptop and game on one monitor and keep these programs on the other and watch them as the game is running to see if one or both get too hot right before the shutdown.

Here are some images with that monitoring software, if anyone would be amazing enough to have a look at them. I didn't get any decent screenshots of the normal temp monitor I was using- RealTemp- but the right digit, I assume the maximum temp recorded, spiked as high as 78 degrees celcius while on the loading screen before shut down. The titles and description of each image describe the scenario and when they were taken.

http://imgur.com/a/heSJY#0 (Forgive the title of "Heat Issues" as we're not sure on that but wasn't sure what else to call it.)

And here, sorry for the separate album, are the GPU readings while idle and when the launcher is active with not much difference. http://imgur.com/a/ti3Ag

Does anything seem out of order? Again, like I said, I'm completely stupid with this tech so I have no idea.

Here also is a DxDiag log. Now, to start with, I know my laptop is not built for gaming. I got it as a present, but the buyers checked it was good for the game when they bought it with multiple sources and the answer was yes, and they were right; like I said, up until now completely smooth gaming, no troubles with overheating or graphics whatsoever, and given it has occurred on other games like Team Fortress 2 when not plugged in (uninstalled last month before the problem got this worse because I stopped playing it once the work started piling up again.)

i know you said none of the just buy a desktop stuff. I used to game on a laptop, it's fun, it's conveinant but they can only handle so much with out getting to hot. my satellite would get so hot after gaming on it for 30 mins that it would almost be hot enough to burn my legs

http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ try this program and see how hot your graphics card and cpu get you can run it in the back. maybe play for about 15 mins then check and see how hot everything got

I understand that, but I've been gaming with no issues for a year and a half now like I said, so I know something has taken a turn for the worse as it handled it fine for the past year. Anyway, thank you, I'll try that! :D

Still, I doubt I'll last 15 minutes in game.

It may be some hardware issue, ram or something that can't handle pressure anymore due to overheating in past battery may also be at fault.
Does it happen on all games?
What laptop do you have exactly?
Does it have any problems while browsing internet?

Your power-block has a fail-safe that shuts off your computer when temps get too high. After the first shut off thing will go downhill and the block will continuously shut you off more and more often. If you were to run on battery only you will likely last longer but the laptop will be hotter than normal. Keep the block in an open area, preferably not on carpet and if possible put a fan under it.

I have someone coming to look at the laptop on Monday, but I've just opened SWTOR now after doing a big C drive cleanout. My storage is now in the healthy blue zone rather than the red, meaning of course I was running very low. Could this have possibly been causing the crashes, given I haven't had one yet?! (Still might, just curious.) It just seems very peculiar given how it started out when not being plugged in, so I don't think is the cause, but I figured it didn't hurt to check before the repair guy comes anyway.
