I have a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive (I think it's part of the my passport series, I do not remember the name) and it is not showing up in any computer. I tried three different laptops but it does not show up. I do not care if the drive dies, what I want is my data back.
When I connect it to a laptop the small LED indicator light's up and I am 100% positive that I can hear the drive spin (no clicking), so I suppose it has not died yet. What can I do to temporarily (until I get the data) or permanently revive this hard drive?

But it happened all of a sudden, and also it does not show up in other laptops aswel, not just mine

Well you cannot get any data off it yourself if no computer will recognise it. That's a job for a data recovery specialist which most of us cannot afford.

Good practice dictates that you should not rely on just one drive on which to save important files. You should keep backup copies on at least one additional drive or on write-once optical discs (data is safer on write-once optical media).

I learned that the hard way 10 years ago. I naively believed that hard drives lasted forever and I lost many irreplaceable family photos taken when digital pocket cameras first hit the shops.
