Hey so I've looked online and there seems to be no clear explanation why a consumer router that can be turned into an access point, like an Asus ac68u, is the same price as a standalone access point like the Cisco wap321. So I guess the question I am asking is which would one consider better? Even though the Asus router technically has better technology I'm confused why they are priced the same.
Thanks,
David

You can't really compare those 2 devices the cisco is does not even support 802.11ac and the asus does not support the vlans and some of the other commercial features the cisco does.

The asus also does not support PoE which is a major factor in the cost.

Still you are wasting a large amount of money to use the ac68u as a AP. You are paying for a lot of feature like firewalls and QoS and all kinds of other things you will not be able to use when running in AP mode.

If you want inexpensive AP look at engenius or ubuquiti. They sell real AP for a fraction of the price of the cisco ones.

Okay well I would just be using it as an access point and not a router or firewall since I already have one in the system. So what I am understanding is that the Asus ac68u in access point mode is better than a Cisco wap321 and the only reason they are priced the same is because of the Cisco name, correct?
Thanks for the help

I would very highly suggest you put the ac68u as the router and replace your old one. I does some very nice things. Once you set it up you get your own website you can get to from anywhere and access your stuff inside the network. You can play movies/music from your house on your phone and laptops it's pretty slick you get a web address something like yourname.asuscomm.com and you login and can get to everything on your network like a presetup VPN (whick this router can do also).
