I'm looking to but a new laptop from hp and i have 2 options when it comes to the video cards they install..

these are the base system specs, the only variable is the GPU i select.

Intel Core i5 4200m
16GB RAM
500GB SSD

The two GPU's in question are the following:

Nvidia Geforce GT750m 4GB (Im not sure if hp uses the GDDR3 or 5)
&
Nvidia Geforce GT840m 2GB (i know its DDR3)

The 840 was just released this month and from the very little i could find, it has many pros and some cons as i would expect.

Can anyone shed some light on what i should do here?

I plan to game moderately with the laptop. a desktop is not an option in my case.

Which system will preform better, and why?

Thanks everyone!

The GT 840M would be my choice. It uses Nvidia's new maxwell architecture which seems to be hugely energy efficient and thus runs very cool.

The first maxwell card out was the GTX 750 Ti desktop card which had similar performance to a 140W GTX 650 Ti but ran on only 60W!!!!

These new maxwell cards will run cool, quiet and very efficient meaning your laptop will be cooler to the touch and have less fan noise. Also expect driver optimizations for the new chip to increase performance even more! The GT 750M can't possibly use more than 2GB VRAM at 1080p and I'm pretty sure its a re-badged GTX 660M. I'd always pick new architecture.
