Hey guys,

I have been using my rig for 3.5 years now and my GFX card is an EVGA GeForce570.
For years I have been using my Samsung 30" monitor running on 2560x1600 resolution through a DVI cable.

I am now about to buy a new monitor by LG, it's a 34" UltraWide QHD Monitor 21:9 3440x1440 resolution and was wondering if I could power it up with my 570.
The monitor does not have DVI, only Thunderbolt, Display Port and HDMI. I would be OK to run it at this point at 2560x1440 but I think that with the 570 the only way to connect it to the monitor would be through HDMI and I think it is capped at 1920x1080.

So my first question: can I keep using this card and this monitor and work in higher resolutions than 1920x1080?

If not and granted that I do not want to upgrade my entire computer, what new GFX card do I need to buy that can connect to this monitor and drive higher resolutions and can still fit the motherboard that I now have? (PCI slot etc).

Thank you very much for your help!
Gurt.

Just get a DVI-D to DisplayPort adapter. That should still allow you to use your GTX 570 on that monitor.

Quick Edit: I'm seeing that some of these adapters are resolution-limited, so keep that in mind. You might find a cable that's DVI to DP that might work.

Any current video card should work fine in your motherboard, and most now come with a DisplayPort natively, if you decide to upgrade.

Hey Craig,

Thanks for your answer!
I think that the 570 uses PCI Express 2.0 while all the newer cards are 3.0. Are you sure I can just buy a 670 or 770 and use it with my motherboard?

Thanks again!

PCIE 3.0 is backwards compatible with PCIE 2.0, so yes, you would be able to just pop a new card in and be good to go!

SLI solutions are the only ones drastically effected by PCIE3.0 at the moment. Single card setups don't saturate all the PCIE 2.0 lanes yet, so there's no discernible difference between PCIE 3.0 and PCIE 2.0 in single card setups.

This is awesome!
One last question: if I do buy a new card (thinking of the 770), can I just connect it using displayport cable and achieve the max resolution of the monitor? (3440x1440)

Am I hurting the 700 performance in any way by plugging it into a PCI Express 2.0 slot?

Thanks!

Look at the product you're buying online, usually Newegg will show you the back of the card to show that it has a full size (and not Mini-DP) DisplayPort on the back. You would then just connect it with a DP-to-DP cable to get the max resolution. I think this is also how it works on 4K monitors at the moment too, either 1 DP for full 4K or two DVI connections to get to 4K.

This was from the last article I saw comparing PCE3.0 to PCIE 2.0 with a single GTX Titan, and there was like a .4 Frame per second difference in games and Uniengine benchmarks (which could just be test error). So no, no harm to the 770 performance at all.

If it didn't cost almost as much as my whole mid-month paycheck, I would *love* one of those for work, as I have about 10 different Excel spreadsheets open at any given time. That thing looks *awesome*!

I'm glad to hear it Gurt. Enjoy the new monitor and graphics card! :)
