Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade my old Dell XPS 8100 config, but am unsure how far I can go with the current motherboard.
I currently have a Core i7 870 cpu, so the socket should be 1156. Can I get a better processor for this socket? All current i5/i7 cpus seem to need 1155 which as far as I know is not backwards compatible.

Also, do you see any issues with upgrading my old GeForce GTX 460 card with a Gigabyte GV-N760OC-4GD GTX 760? I know that the 760 card uses a PCIe 3 connector, while the mobo only has a PCIe 2, but those should be backwards compatible. Will I see a big performance drop because of it or should it me marginal? Any other issues I should consider?
I have a 650W psu that should be enough for this card which needs 500W, right?

Thanks for your help.

Can you get a better processor for the 1156 socket? No, Core i7 870 is the best available.

You may want to use a new bare PC case. You can get a good one for about $40. A Mid Tower will fit an ATX size motherboard.

Some current Intel CPUs are Socket: LGA1150 Haswell and the older Socket: LGA1155 Ivy Bridge models, You might check some CPU Benchmarks to get an idea on how the CPUs perform.

PCIe 3 and PCIe 2 are compatible when mixed. Newer motherboards will probably have at least one PCIe 3 slot.
