How much memory...HP XW 8200?

I just upgraded my HP xw8200 workstation to 16 GIG of RAM. The performance jump was awesome (I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 but). When I was doing the upgrade I noticed that there were 8 slots for memory. I only used 4 (4 X 4 GIG). Can I install 16 more GIG without goofing anything up? I'd like to use the maximum amount of RAM possible since it is so inexpensive.
I checked online and all the websites say that 16GIG is the maximum RAM I can install. But most of them were written before the 4 GIG modules came out.

Thank you for your responses. I really appreciate it. I am going to look into this a bit further. I have found HP data sheets and info that suggests the limit is much higher...as in a White Paper that says"

"Windows XP Professional x64 Edition uses 64-bit addressing enabling virtually the entire amount of installed RAM to be made available on computers that have large address infrastructures (where the entire system has more than 4 GB addressing capabilities via the processor, chipset, physical memory capacity, etc). The HP xw4300, xw6200, xw8200 and xw9300 Workstations have the required infrastructures and even the PCI memory address range is recovered by re-mapping it above the top of physical memory."

"Conclusion: If you are planning to use Windows XP x64 Edition on your HP xw4300, xw6200, xw8200 or xw9300 64-bit enabled workstation, install as much RAM as you would like up to the physical limit of each workstation."

Obviously this would also hold true for Windows 7 64 bit. The RAM is relatively inexpensive at $74 for 16 GIG. it might be worth the gamble if it actually works.

I'm just gonna caution you that it MIGHT not work because of some complicated BS, something to do with dual sided ram counting as 2 sticks (one stick, but ram chips on both sides, the memory controller thinks it's two sticks) and even though you have slots available, your "stick count" gets used up by the dual sided ram.

Also 32 gbs of ram is only useful if you're actually using it. if it sits there empty all the time it's not doing anything for you.

Thanks James. I'll certainly keep your warning in mind. I also plan on installing a 2 GIG RAM video card (ASUS GeForce GT 610) and that will affect my total RAM count. I will install that first to make sure the comp will accept it. If it does, then I will go ahead and order the 16 GIG memory RAM and give it a try. I will keep you posted on the results. I am a big fan of the HP workstations because they are so darn durable for home use and you can buy them used at a very reasonable price. Granted, they aren't speed demons like the newest gaming computers, but for the games and use I make of them, I don't need the ultimate speedster. ;)
Either way, I enjoyed our exchange and I will let you know what the final results are. Keeping my fingers crossed all this will work. :)

Well I gave it a shot and bought 16 more gig of RAM. James, you were right. After I installed it and tried to boot the comp up, it started beeping and an orange light was flashing in front. It wouldn't boot up with the extra 16 GIG of Ram. So I had to go back to just 16GIG of RAM. Oh well...lesson learned.

I ran into a new situation with my HP xw8200 today. I installed a new video card (Zotac Geforce GT630) that has 4 GIG of onboard DDR3 memory. However, after I installed the driver and checked the System Info, it said the video card was only 1.5 GIG of RAM. Evidently Windows or the motherboard is limiting the total amount of RAM I can use. :(

So when you say your system info says there's only 1.5gigs, it looks like this but says 1.5 billion bytes right?

Hi Deputy...

I known its being a while, but do you remember what type of 4Gb memory did you ended up using with the wx8200??

was it PC3200 or a bigger one?

I would really appreciate since you managed to get a 4GB memory module to work with it, and HP says it wouldn't! ;)

although the limit is 16GB, it's much easier and cheaper to find 4GB modules than 2GB ones... and if it can handle a faster module, like PC6400 or PC5300, even better!!

anyhow, thanks lots for sharing!!

cheers...

Well, what will likely happen, is the motherboard will take the module, and just downgrade it to a slower speed, possibly the slowest speed it can use.
