Goal: PS3, GTA 5 online as cheap as possible

Hello,

I have a friend who plays GTA 5 on his PS3, and I want to join him. My problem is that I haven't owned a gaming console since the Gamecube... and I won't be using the PS3 for anything more. How can I play GTA 5 on a PS3 online with my friend, for as cheap possible?

I am assuming the following for the most economical solution, so please suggest otherwise and I will edit:

12gb PS3
old 120gb SSD [replacing stock 12gb]

Will the 120gb capacity be overkill? Am I better off pawning it and getting something half (~60gb) the size? I've heard of GTA 5 installations being as large as ~30gb.

Ya, bne careful. Buying one with the yellow light of death usually means they tried to bake it in the over or took a heatgun to it, couldn't fix it, now they're selling 75% of people watch youtube, think they can "reflow" and try first. If it had the yellow light of death and it was "fixed", more than likely they put new thermal paste on, tightened the bolts tight and it will fail in a few months.

Then there is the more slick ones. they'll bring it to you and let you test it, or show it working at their place, but oddly, they don't have any ps3/360 games, but they have a movie to test, oh, it plays a dvd, it's working. get it home, games won't load. PS3's use 2 laser diodes, one red for cd/dvd, one blue, for blueray movies/games...

Yeah, I'm thinking similarly. I'm already hawking eBay and craigslist... I see many listed as "not working" for dirt cheap that are SO TEMPTING, but that's another DIY to spend time on...

Funny note off topic: Upon speaking to a service representative via chat on the playstation support website, the man said that the PS3 wouldn't support SSDs, lol. I wish these guys could learn how to use Google... I mean, at the end of the day, the difference is somewhat negligible (varying in greatness from game to game), but for the person who wants the absolute best, they should know these things.

i run a console repair business and see so many people buy a used one only to get scammed in the above mentioned things and many more.

I'd probably buy one from gamestop or somethuing with a warranty or buy a new one and bite the bullet. you should have figured this out a few months ago around black friday/boxing day. insane ps3 deals them. lol.

Thanks so much for your input. You saved me numerous potential headaches - I'll probably go for a 12gb slim from Frys or some other retail.

If I had the money I would've saved from buying all the computer components I've purchased over the last month that would've been purchased on black Friday, I'd have enough to buy a new PS3, controller, SSD, and mouse + keyboard converter without financing! The tides of 2014...
