AMD A10-6800K overheating or not?!

Hi guys, been using Toms for advice for ages but this is the first thing I can't resolve!

Basically assembled a new setup and it's running a little oddly to say the least!

MoBo - Gigabyte F2A88XM-DS2 \
CPU - AMD A10-6800K --- all new components
fan - Zalman CNPS2X (w/ Arctic MX4) /
RAM - 2x RipJaws X 4Gb (DDR3-2133) /
GPU - nVidia 8800GTX
Win7

In BIOS the APU temp reads initially at 50-60C, but rises to 90C and upwards VERY quickly (~30secs) so i turn it off.... I updated the BIOS and it made no difference.

I've been monitoring the temperatues In windows and there are no constant temp increases, I'm using HWMonitor, Core Temp and SpeedFan but this it where things are getting strange!!!

HWMonitor reads ~50C idle, yet spikes MASSIVELY for a second (I just had a reading of 255C!??!?!) then cools down again within seconds. CoreTemp seems to think the APU is running at ~2-3C and SpeedFan says it's at a stable 43C!

I'm just wondering if this is likely to be a BIOS/MoBo sensor error or an error with the APU chip and the temp detection itself?!

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I'm at a loose end!!!

well, it is most likely between that 43c and 50c. it did not actually go up to 255c, and it was not at 2-3c. i would run a stress test and check the temps while running a stress test. 50c is fine, so is 60c. at about 70c, it will still perform the same, but will start to age faster. at about 90c, thats when you have a problem. and at about 400c, then you get the internal cores exploding, putting holes in your system XD

hehe thanks for the reply, yeah I guessed its probably around 45c, will use SpeedFan as 'near-to-true' readings, as HWMon is obviously insane and CoreTemp doesnt actually tell me the core temp xD

that's the windows temp readings (sort of) sorted, but I'm really really worried about the BIOS reading of 90c and upwards, as I have the side of the case off and it does get noticably hot, very hot in fact... any idea what could be causing that?!

now for a stress test!

I ran BurnIn Test last night, the cores were all at full load and CoreTemp went up to 78c so I stopped the test.
...but...
SpeedFan didn't even detect ANY change in temp, despite showing core activity at 100%, yet when I run GTA:SA it notices the increase in temp (about 3c) just to load the game!

[I've given up with HWMonitor as the readings are seriously erratic. I just can't trust anything it's telling me!]

I've just switched PC on now, and CoreTemp is giving me a reading of "0c (?)"... I know the (?) means it can't read it properly but surely if it can detect change in temp during BurnIn Test, then it should be reading it right?

I just don't understand how 3 different programs (4 incl. BIOS) all have completely different readings for the same CPU!

Could it be a faulty CPU or MoBo?

I have it but I only have limited knowledge of what I'm lookinf for, the complex side of this is a bit above me, it recognizes all my hardware correctly though as far as I'm aware!

One other question: with this processor, should all 4 cores be taking an even load? or does it depend on the type of, and amount of processes running?

I have the same processor and I had sorta the same problem, basically you have a motherboard very similar to mine(GA-F2A85X-UP4) and when you look at the temp under bios it is under MAX load because Gigabyte motherboards always push the cores to the max in bios, and all those programs don't even work that well, I got AIDA 64 Extreme and that is the most accurate one for me all the other programs didn't read right because this CPU is apparently not that easy to get a temp read off unless its in bios and don't worry about the temps gigabyte has a automatic shutoff feature if it gets too hot, just get a new cooler if you are that worried about it, but I have the same specs basically just a motherboard that is similar but not the same and I'm running it under the stock cooler and even on games I play on max for hours it goes up to 80-90 Celsius max, no overheat. Again if you are that worried about it just get a better cooler. Don't trust all readings better to check how hot the heatsink is to be sure.
