To start this is a 250gb wd scorpio blue model WD2500BEVT. I recently pulled this from a laptop i got from a friend. the laptop did not have a charger or have any juice left so i just dismantled it for parts. To format this hdd i thought i would just directly hook it through a SATA port on my desktop. However when i did this my desktop slowed to a crawl and would not boot several times. After about 3 attempts i enabled the hotswap feature in my bios, and booted normally without it attached. After i attached it 4 partions pulled up and required formatting. When i attempted to do so a message came up saying the drive is read only. After this i tried through disk management to be given a similar message. I feel like i missing a simple step to format this drive, but could someone help me figure this out?

When you directly connected the HDD into the SATA ports, because the HDD has the other OS, you need go to the BIOS, and double check or set up the boot order, like the 1st=DVD/CD, 2nd= the HDD with OS ( not the old 250GB one), saving and exit, reboot the PC. Also you are btter to connect the HDD with OS into the SATA port_0, most PC will default to boot from that sata port. Run the program from WD to check the HDD first http://support.wd.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810&sid=3&lang=en then try to format again.

Also you can buy the adapter similar like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119152 then you can use any HDD for the external HDD too.

I made sure i connected the hdd to SATA port4 and had the remaining 3 hooked up as they were. (port 0 is my os, port 2 is my cd/dvd burner, port 3 is my encrypted drive). My boot order is as follows: 1. WD5000AZRX, and thats it! I have nothing else in the boot order. Thanks for the link on the tool i will give it a shot and get back on here in a bit.

I tried the tool you suggested with luck for my hdd i had already had but no such luck with the wd. To my knowledge this drive is pretty much dead so i will recycle it and just get on with life. Still thanks for the tool link really useful.
