Desktop: Win7 Ultimate 64-bit
Rosewill USB 2.0 RNX-N250UBE Wireless Adapter
Laptop: Win7 Home Premium 64 bit
Atheros AR9285

Not sure what else to list that is pertinent here, but anyways-
I live in a college campus dormitory that has a campus-wide WiFi network. I'm trying to find a way to connect my desktop in my room to my laptop when I am out in the main lobby of the building I live in. The network system, being part of the school public network, appears to block that type of connection, as I've not found a way to get either of my computers to see each other when over that network.

The Rosewill adapter on my desktop supports virtual WiFi, which I can connect my laptop to, but there is somewhat limited range to this. I actually get a solid signal until I get to the hallway door that separates the hallway I live in to the main lobby. Once the door closes, signal drops from 85% to 5%, then drops if I walk another step away. (The lobby is about 70-80 feet from my room, the door is about 40 feet) I own a set of homeplugs, but it would seem that the hallway is on a different fuse box or something, because the homeplugs only see each other while I am in the hallway. Going past that door they no longer connect (seriously, this door is like an insurmountable mountain for networking, haha)

I also tried setting up a VPN, but the few I tried have all been much to slow to have been useful for what I'm trying to do. (Hoping for at least 10mbps) On that note, what I AM trying to do is use Valve's new Steam In-Home Streaming service currently in beta. The service requires both systems to have an internet connection, and a network connection to each other. I have gotten it to work with an ethernet connection as well as the virtual WiFi network my desktop's Rosewill antenna is capable of, but nothing long-range. I do realize that Steam's IHS is intended for home networks and such, but I'd really like to find a way to make this work. If there's anything that I haven't tried that anyone can suggest, I'm open to ideas.

Yeah, I tried LogMeIn (Hamachi, right) and it was only doing like 1-2mbps, which is odd because my normal internet speed according to Speedtest.net is around 15-25mbps depending on how many people are using the internet. Unless there are some settings I should be looking at, or I'm doing something wrong :p
