Hello,
I was looking at the 2 of these cards:

R9 290X: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
GTX 780 Ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

And I was wondering which would be better for 5760x1080 gaming? (SINGLE card at first, will get a second later down the road)
I will be playing games like COD Ghosts and Skyrim and Crysis, occasionally BF4, and things like that.
I was thinking that the r9 290x might be a better choice at that resolution because it has more vram, however, the 780ti is a beast in general, and outperforms basically everything.
I plan on xfiring it later on if I do get it, but, would it just be better to get a single 780 ti for a bit instead of a single 290x?
Thank you in advance for anybody who helps.

I'd go with the 780ti. It does outperform the 290x and especially if you plan on running 2 cards, then the extra memory is a moot point.

So the vram should not be a problem, even at maxed BF4 at 5760x1080 ?

That still doesn't answer my question. A lot of vram is used at that resolution. is 3gb really enough?

Its über fast ram (7ghz) on the 780ti compared to that of the 290X which is 5ghz. Even in 4k, the power of the gpu core runs out before the RAM actually gets bottle necked. Also, you may not be able to max out BF4 at a good FPS without a second card at that res.

Get the 780Ti, you won't regret it mate.

To answer your question, the three gigabytes is enough for that res as the gpu core itself will run out of steam long before that ram does. The ram on the 780ti is also a ton faster than that of the 290X. The 290x is also more expensive and has little to no overclock ability.

The ASUS GTX 780Ti DCUII http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... would be the best option at that resolution.

With your games list, there's a few things to consider:

COD: Ghosts is a showcase for Nvidia's latest graphics technologies, including TXAA, PhysX, HBAO+ Ambient Occlusion. and even GPU accelerated animal fur, yep. None of that can be enabled on an AMD card.

Of course BF4 has Mantle support, but that's mainly going to help those with weaker CPUs and lower end video cards.

A little known fact about Skyrim is that only Nvidia cards allow you to enable Ambient Occlusion in the game by forcing it through the Nvidia Control Panel. So there actually is a noticeable difference in graphics quality between Nvidia and AMD cards. Ambient Occlusion adds more realism and depth to shadows in the game fundamentally impacts nearly everything. On the graphic below, Skyrim on an AMD card looks like the "AO: OFF" screenshot.

Your other issue, though, is that resolution. A single card of any type is going to struggle in those games (maybe not Skyrim). You will definitely likely want to look at dual card setups. While Crossfire is improved in the 290x, there is no question that SLI is a bit more stable with better driver support. The GTX 780 Ti in SLI is going to manage its heat better and will be a cooler running card and quieter in a dual card setup.

Note that 1-2 FPS is no difference at all, really, and that overall these framerates are mostly unplayable.
