~19 FPS when playing FSX

Hey, here are my specs -

4GB ram 1333 Mhz
AMD Radeon HD 7770 Ghz Edition
Corsair CX500 PSU
Intel Core i5-2300 CPU 2.8 Ghz
Intel DH67BL Motherboard

I don't know why I get 19 FPS when I play fsx at big airports with PMDG and Aerosoft add-ons.

I have tweaked my FSX.cfg like a million times, and I don't have add-ons like REX and GEX.

It's very annoying because that is a pretty good PC for this kind of games.

Your graphics card is a budget model and the most likely thing to be letting your system down. If you are looking to game with this machine, that would be a very good area to upgrade and will give you the biggest return in frame rate.

I don't think so. This is an XFX card and it's like a month old. I saw a huge difference at my other games when using this card, like 60 FPS at NFS Most Wanted and NBA 2K14.

I accidentally chose this as the best answer when trying to reply.

Hi Eran,

your CPU is the bottleneck.
FSX is CPU intensive as it processes the frames by the cpu first, then sending it to the GPU.
I run a core i5 4670k OC to 4.4 GHz and with PMDG NGX plane i come to a framerate of about 30fps.
You probably need a better CPU. Remind that FSX also doesn't take advantage of hypertreading, so take a decent core i5 - k-model so you can overclock it.

Is an i7-4770 good? I don't know anything about CPU overclocking and cooling.

Hi Eran, If you vant to overclock your CPU you must choose the k version of that CPU (4770k)
Also take notice that FSX does not take advantage of Hyper-trading, so for FSX the core i5 4670k will be fine (it's about the same as the 4770k, but without the hyper-treading function, saves you also about 100$)

That sounds good, but do I need to change the cpu cooler that comes with it to overclock it?

And is this true?

And what about my 7770 GPU? Is it also a bottleneck?

Hasswell cpu's can run quite hot when you overclock, so a good cooler is a must. You can choose an air cooler (i am not so familiar with the models here) or a plug and play watercooler like a corsair h80 or h60 (with push pull, but that will cost you the same as the h80)
What they say in the link above is true, but:
1. Fsx does not use the hypertreadiing, so if you buy the system primary for fsx, the i5 will do the job fine.
2. More l3 cache is also because you've got to share it with the extra 4 virtual cores in the i7
3. Stock speeds or turbo mode? Who cares if you want to overclock :)

With a decent cooler on an i5 4670k, you can get 4,5ghz with 1.2 volts if you have a good chip.
I run it with a corsair h60 cooler with push pull setup and it stays pretty cool! - 65degrees C at prime95

If you run fsx, monitor the gpu load for a while and check the load of the gpu, praphic memory, etc.
If it is all 99 or 100%, you maybe need a stronfer card. It depends on the resultion you play and the settings in fsx (aa).
I have a quite basic asus gtx750 oc 2gb ddr5 and it runs fine.

This whole CPU OC thing is too complicated for me and my budget. And my GPU runs at about 40-80% load. Will it work without overclocking?

Hi Eran, Your gpu will be fine. If you want to play FSX smooth with options like PMDG, overclocking is almost a must. The i54670k with watercooler cost as much as the 4770, so for the budget it has no impact.
With the new overclocktools from the MB-providers it's not so dificult as you think.
Just adapt the code voltage and the multiplier in your bios, make some tests and off you go :)
